Error when using the function 'Save Zotero Snapshot from Current Page

Hi there,

I am running Zotero standalone (4.0.16) with the Chrome extension (Windows XP, unfortunately, if it matters). Every time I try to right-click and choose 'Save Zotero Snapshot from Current Page' I get an error that says 'An error occurred while saving this item. Check Known Translator Issues for more information.' It seems to happen no matter what webpage I try. I haven't found this specific problem with anywhere else.

Thanks for your help!
  • Can you produce a Debug ID for both Chrome and Zotero Standalone while trying to save a snapshot?
  • Here's the ID: D1560169745.

Hope that works... I actually did the action twice, and didn't catch the Debug ID the first time after I submitted to server, so I did the process again.
  • Is that from Chrome or Standalone?
  • Could you generate one from Zotero Standalone as well? Most of the Snapshot processing happens in Zotero Standalone.
  • I am having a problem doing it in standalone. I do the process asked for the in Debug link, and no lines are logged. This is probably related to another (manageable) problem I have had recently -- whenever I add something to Zotero, it seems to go to the server and not to my standalone. I have to hit 'sync' to see anything I add using the Chrome plugin.

    Thanks for your prompt replies.
  • OK, it seems that Chrome is not actually communicating with Zotero Standalone. In Zotero Preferences in Chrome under the General tab where it says Zotero Standalone, does it say available or unavailable?

Update Zotero Standalone to 4.0.17. If you have any security software on your computer disable it temporarily and see if that helps.
  • I have updated, and Chrome reports that Zotero standalone is still unavailable. I am on a work computer at a large institution so I don't have access to the security software. If you think there is a reasonable chance it is a security software problem, I can open a ticket with my IT department.

The Chrome extension appears to be getting an HTTP 502 Bad Gateway error. Simon can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Standalone ever returns that, which would mean it's actually talking to the firewall, proxy server, etc. Those should almost always be configured to not interfere with traffic to 127.0.0.1 (a.k.a., localhost, a.k.a. the computer itself), so if you can't alter any of those settings you'll have to talk to your IT department. It's generally a misconfiguration when requests to 127.0.0.1 are being intercepted.
  • It's very likely. Let's wait for Dan to take a look at the Debug ID you submitted.
  • Hi Dan and aurimas,

Sorted! I had been messing around with my proxy settings last week and didn't realize that was when my Zotero issues started. Turned off the proxy (which didn't accomplish what I wanted anyway) and Chrome now talks to Zotero standalone and saves webpages just fine. Thanks for your help! (I'm a total Zotero fangirl and just converted my whole research group -- this interaction has utterly confirmed my love of the program.)
