Half note missing

Hi guys,

I updated an old note yesterday and added a fair bit of text to it. When I opened it this morning, everything I typed yesterday (but not the original note) was gone. However there is a lot of blank space where the text should be. Is it a display error of some sort?

Apologies if this has been answered before,

A.
  • I don't think we've seen anything like that before, but you can click the HTML button in the bottom right of the note toolbar and see if you can see any of the text you added in there. If so, copy all the HTML to a text file for safekeeping and we'll take it from there.
  • Hi Dan,

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

If it's any help, the note itself appears grey under the reference, rather than black.

It looks like the text I typed is gone, all there is in the HTML file (after the old text) is a lot of " <p> </p> ", which I'm guessing is not good!

No, that is not good. I'm afraid I can't tell you what happened, since we've never seen this before and I can't really think of any way for this to happen. If you have a backup of your Zotero data directory, you could temporarily disable auto-sync and restore from the backup. If you find the note, you'd want to either export it and then switch back to your current database or simply make a change to it, which will trigger a conflict when you then sync, allowing you to choose to keep the local version.

It might also be in the automatic .bak files Zotero saves in that directory — look at the timestamps of those files — in which case you could see Restoring from the Last Automatic Backup (but instead of using the Restore to Zotero Server you could just export the note or modify it before syncing).
If it's any help, the note itself appears grey under the reference, rather than black.
That isn't relevant — that's just because it doesn't match your active search.
  • Ok great, thanks Dan.
