corrupted?

Hi all,
for some weeks now, I have not been able to add anything to my library because it's become corrupted. I try to ad something and it gives me a "and error occurred while saving this item". Then, when i try to open the stanadalone, it gives me " the zotero database "zotero" appears to have become corrupted. Please restart zotero to attempt an automatic restore from the last backup".

I believe it's connected to the crash I've had twice yesterday (could also be cause I tend to run too many programs at the same time) - it also forced me to close firefox once today, as in, caused it to crash. What to do?

I am working on a Mac, browser I use is firefox.
Thanks so much for all the possible help.
  • After you get that error and restart, Zotero opens?
What happens if you check database integrity from the Advance --> Files and Folders tab of the Zotero preferences then?
  • I try to reopen zotero (standlaone) and it gives me this:

"Your zotero database is currently in use. Only one instance of zotero using the same database maybe be opened simultaneously at this time. If firefox with the zotero extension is open, please close it and restart zotero standalone."

At the same time, I don't have the browser version open.
  • And when i try to open the browser version, it says it's become corrupted and I should restart firefox/zotero.
  • Try the DB Repair Tool. If you could also post the Upload ID that the tool provides here, that'd be helpful — we've seen a suspicious number of both corruption errors and the above message in the last few days, so I want to see if they're actually related.
  • Hi all,
I have been tearing my hair out over a corruption problem I've recently encountered. The message that comes up is: "The Zotero database 'zotero.sqlite' appears to have become corrupted." Now, even Firefox won't open (I uninstalled and reinstalled both Zotero and Firefox and have shut down and reopened my Mac computer a number of times). Any help would be appreciated! The problem began today when I downloaded an updated version of Word, so perhaps that's the problem?
  • have you tried the database repair tool linked above?
  • Yes. I've tried the DB repair tool, but I can't locate the zotero.sqlite file. As I mentioned, I also can't access Zotero or Firefox (when I try to open Firefox it comes up with the same error message: "The Zotero database 'zotero.sqlite' appears to have become corrupted."
  • Check the default locations http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data

If you can't find it, search your computer for "zotero.sqlite"

...sorry...just to clarify. I haven't actually tried the DB repair tool. Rather, I looked at the instructions and discovered I couldn't locate the zotero.sqlite file.
  • So you have searched your whole computer for a zotero.sqlite file and it was nowhere to be found?
  • Affirmative. I searched "All My Files" and zotero.sqlite did not come up.
  • It won't, in its default location. Follow the linked instructions. Hold down Option before clicking the Go menu in Finder to access the "Library" folder.
  • Found it! The file "zotero.sqlite" was in the Firefox profile. However, I wasn't able to open the file because a message came up, which read: There is no application set to open the document 'zotero.sqlite'." As stated earlier, I'm unable to open Firefox.
  • You're not supposed to open it. You're supposed to upload it to the Database Repair Tool https://www.zotero.org/utils/dbfix/
  • Oh, my gosh! Big props to the Zotero people who helped me resolve what I thought was an insurmountable problem. Thank you so much for your help!!
