Broken file links

I have been using Zotero for about 9 months now and have had corrupted databases twice. I use a portable version of FF 2.0.0.16 and have used it with a U3 Samsung flash drive. This allows me a great deal of flexibility and I am really grateful to the Zotero team for this application, because it has really helped with report writing.

The problem I am experiences is making me question the wisdom of relying on Zotero though, as I cannot access the PDFs I have stored via links. I keep getting link failures indicating that the file may have been moved outside of Zotero, but I have confiremd that the PDFs are there, that using the DB recovering tool doesn't fix the problem, that the Zotero Error log only shows a failed exception capture on the part of FoxClocks and that I can manually open the PDFs from the storage folder. The primary issue is that I already have 140+ PDF stored in this fashion and it now looks like I am going to have to manually relink all of them.

I do have a back up of my database from May, and I am thinking about restoring that, but I will loose everything I have added since then. In addition, I don't even know if the restore will work or if I can export just those citations I have created since May.

I would appreciate any help you guys can offer!
  • I also found that there were warnings in the Error Console:

Warning: Expected ',' or '{' but found ';'. Ruleset ignored due to bad selector.
    Source File: http://www.zotero.org/wp-content/themes/working/style.css
    Line: 88
  • I did see the similar error message in: http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/3228/, but I would like confirmation before I start deleting any files that Firefox uses.

    Thank you,
  • Another interesting note. I have found that all the PDF links that I have added since July appear to be working fine. Only those that were added previous to the last database corruption fix around the end of May aren't working. When I did first do the replacement, I believe I checked the links at that time. I thought they working then.
  • Upgrading to Firefox 3 and running a final DB repair (if "Check database integrity" in the Advanced pane of the Zotero prefs still shows an error) is highly recommended, as there were database instability problems in Firefox 2.

The unlinked PDFs may or may not be related to database corruption, but if you upload your DB to the repair tool, send the Upload ID to support@zot....org, and let us know some of the attachments that are no longer linked, we can take a look.
