Upgrade to 4.0.16 Compatibility

Hi All,
I needed to take a break away from my dissertation and now that I'm back, I see that a lot has changed. I've looked through the forums and couldn't find exactly the answers I was looking for so hopefully someone can help.

My current configuration is:
Windows XP SP3
Word 2000
Word plugin 3.1.6
FF 3.6.18
Zotero for FF 3.0.6
Zotero Standalone 3.0.6

I see that Zotero is now at 4.0.16 and has had many bug fixes as well as enhancements. My current configuration is stable and I would like to make only as much change as necessary so I am wondering:

- Will there be any problems if I just upgrade the Zotero/FF and Zotero/Standalone to this latest version.
- Will the new Zotero 4.0.16 play nicely with FF 3.6.18, Word plugin 3.1.6 and Word 2000.
- And most importantly, will my existing 3.0 database be compatible with 4.0.16.

Hopefully just the upgrade of Zotero will be ok but if I need to update the Word plugin to 3.1.14, will there be any known issues with Word 2000. I see that only 2003-2013 are specifically listed.

Any recommendations and insight is appreciated.

Thanks
  • Zotero 4.0 will definitely not work with Firefox 3.6.x - so if you don't want to upgrade Firefox to at least version 17, preferably 25, do not update. That said using Firefox 3.6.x (and not even the final version of that) to access the internet on Windows is a terrible, terrible idea. You're basically begging for your computer to be taken over.

Yes, you will need to update the Word plugin to work with Firefox 4.x. Word 2000 is not fundamentally incompatible with the current version of the plugin, but any problems you're on your own.

My recommendation would be to work with up to date software. If a newer Word version is out of the question, consider LibreOffice.

Your database will have to update when you install 4.0.16, but that will work just fine.
  • Microsoft will also end support (including security patches) for Windows XP in April 2014, so it's probably time to think of a more drastic upgrade altogether.
  • Hi all,
Thanks for your inputs. It looks like I'll just be sticking with my existing setup. I was hopeful that I could enjoy some of the features in the newer version but it's gonna end up being a ball of wax.

You saved me a lot of time trying things on my own so I send my thanks.

After I get done with this research project, hopefully I'll have some time so that I can upgrade my browser and maybe even my OS. (and some sleep too)

In the mean time, thanks again and nobody work too hard.

I send a virtual round of Weizen.
