not able to resolve disambiguation of author names

Hi, I really appreciate your help - I'm trying to resolve the issue that others have spoken about, where authors' names are disambiguating in the in-text citations. I've gone through all the references that have this problem and reentered the data into Zotero so that I could be sure the authors' names were spelled identically. But it is still showing up in the in-text citation as "John Smith et al" or "J Smith et al". I've checked my duplicates folder and my trash to see if any of the older versions of the files were laying around, but they are both empty.

Thanks very much!
  • Can you replicate that issue in a fresh document with the same citations?
  • I just tried entering some of the problematic citations in a new document and they appear properly there.
  • then best guess is that you have some items in there that aren't connected to the Zotero database anymore. I'd re-insert the ones that show just initials and see if that helps.
  • Thanks for the advice. I just tried going through the text and deleting then reinserting the references and the problem still appears. Any idea why it wouldn't be a problem with a new word document but is in this existing document?
  • In the new document - did you try inserting all references that display disambiguation?
  • Also, try switching to a different citation style and then back again. This will make improperly deleted citations re-appear in your document. See if you have any new (unwanted) citations and delete them.
