Journal of Wildlife Management- same 1st author and year; different second author

I am trying to sort out a in-text citation problem with the Journal of Wildlife Management style.

When a document has two papers that have three more authors (cited as et al.) with the same first author, same year, but different second authors I believe they should be cited as (Author et al. YEARa). However when adding an intext citation with zotero the intext citation is: (1st AUthor, 2nd Author, et al. YEAR)

The relevant portion of the style guide states "If citations in a series have >1 reference for the same author(s) in the same year, designate the years alphabetically (in italics) and separate citations with semicolons; e.g., (Jones 1980a, b; Hanson 1981; White 1985, 1986)."

For the actual citation causing the problem:

Intext:
(Connelly, Hagen, et al. 2011, Connelly, Rinkes, et al. 2011) or
(Connelly, Hagen, et al. 2011)

Should be:
(Connelly et al. 2011a, b) or
(connelly et al. 2011a)

The bibliographic entries (chapters in a manuscript as book section format):

Connelly, J. W., C. A. Hagen, and M. A. Schroeder. 2011. Characteristics and Dynamics of Greater Sage-Grouse Populations. Pages 53–67 in. Greater Sage-Grouse: ecology and conservation of a landscape species and its habitats. Volume 38. University of California Press, Berkeley, CA, USA.

Connelly, J. W., E. T. Rinkes, and C. E. Braun. 2011. Characteristics of Greater Sage-Grouse Habitats: A Landscape Species at Micro- and Macroscales. Pages 69–83 in. Greater Sage-Grouse: ecology and conservation of a landscape species and its habitats. Volume 38. Studies in Avian Biology, University of California Press, Berkeley, CA, USA.

Any idea how to fix this?
  • the part in the instructions that you cite isn't conclusive either way - the two items do not, in fact, have the same authors, they just have the same first author.
So what we'd need is either an example of this situation from a published article or word from the editors.
  • I finally found out the proper citation to the situation outlined above. The intext citation should read: (Author YEARa, b).

For a specific example the in text citation should be:(Connelly et al. 2011a, b) rather than (Connelly, Hagen, et al. 2011, Connelly, Rinkes, et al. 2011) as it is currently output by the JWM style.

Is this something that can be changed in the zotero JWM style?

    Thanks!
  • sure - does this come from the editors or from a published article? (if the latter, which? so we have it for future reference).
  • I got the information from a former associate editor of the journal.
  • The style is now fixed. The updated version will appear on the repository within 30mins (check the timestamp). Update your copy of the style by clicking "Update Now" in the General tab of the Zotero preferences.

Styles also update automatically within 24hs for Zotero 4.0+
In an existing document, you may have to switch to a different style and back for the changes to take effect once the style is updated.
Any further problems please let us know & thanks for reporting
  • Thanks for fixing the style. Much appreciated!
