I used wrongly another program to edit my file

Hi Zotero,

I am using Word 2013 to write my thesis. I save my files on Dropbox. Once I used KingSoft word editor on my tablet to edit my file. Now, I can't use Zotero for citing. I have the following message:
------------------------
Your document must be permanently upgraded in order to work with Zotero 2.1 or later. It is recommended that you make a backup before proceeding. Are you sure you want to continue?
------------------------

When I press OK another message appeared:

------------------------
Zotero can;t update this document because it was created by a different word processing application with an incompatible field encoding. In order to make a document compatible with both Word and OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice/NeoOffice, open the document in the word processor with which it was originally created and switch the field type to Bookmarks in the Zotero Document Preferences.
------------------------
This I can't understand! Where should I go? And what to do?

Thanks
  • If you placed the file in Dropbox, you should be able to access older versions of the file (right-click on the file on dropbox.com and select Previous Versions). Pick the version before editing in KingSoft.

There are probably other ways to recover Zotero integration capabilities, but IMO this will be the easiest unless you've made a large amount of changes on your tablet.
  • I made a change using my Tablet and afterward I made more changes using my laptop without using Zotero.I prefer to fix my current file.

Thank you for the idea :)
  • I don't know - aurimas is more optimistic than me on this. I'd be very skeptical that you'd be able to restore the Zotero citations with any reasonable amount of work - you may be much faster just copying over the new stuff.
But if you really do want to try restoring this, first step would be to show Word field codes (typically alt+F9 will do that) and copy one field code for a Zotero citation here.
  • FWIW, I can't replicate this. I'm creating a test document in Word 2010 (tried doc and docx) with either Bookmark or Filed formatting and then editing in Kingsoft 5.8.1.160669-en00001. Upon syncing back to my computer, Zotero does not complain about upgrading the document.

Is your KingSoft Office up to date on your tablet?
  • I don't know about its version and the problem is it is away from me today :(
  • Your best bet is probably what adamsmith suggests. Merging in changes in Word is not as difficult as it may seem. Get the "uncorrupted" version from Dropbox and then use Word's "Compare Documents" function (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306484) to accept changes. I'd be careful not to accept any changes (just additions, deletions should be ok) involving Zotero references (e.g. because the reference was copy-pasted in KingSoft). Re-insert such references manually.
  • I just copied and pasted the whole document in a new one and Voala it works :)

    Thanks a lot everyone ...
