GMX freemail users can use https://mediacenter.gmx.net

for WebDAV file storage. I tested the server, it works without a hitch.
I mention this because this provider is popular in german-speaking countries, and for GMX users no extra sign-up with a separate provider is necessary.
  • thanks - that's great I would've never thought of checking that.
  • I think they offer free services in English as well, including storage space, but I'm not sure if that also includes WebDAV. I can't check it out as they seem to block access to their English services from Germany, but see for a start:

Yes they do offer webdav services in English for the UK and US.
I'd never come across them before either. I'm trying to sync my data as I type (not from Firefox ...) - it was very easy to set up.
Its definitely moving files around, absolutely killing my internet connection.

Forgot to add: this is very exciting! I thought I was going to be stuck either a) not being able to sync my attachments or b) having to pay for storage / file transfer c) wait for google to sort themselves out and offer webdav :) nice to see somebody else ahead of the curve here.

Well, it took a couple of hours to sync (no surprise, given the several hundred meg of attachments) but sync it did, up and down. I'm very impressed. Congrats to the developers.
  • On the GMX mediacenter everything is stored in zip-folders. Is that the normal way data is transfered via webdav? I just wonder if I inadvertently compressed the data and thereby slowed down anything ....(retrieval of the attachments or something like that).

  • I'm pretty sure that it's Zotero compressing data to speed up the transfer up and down from the server.

That's the way Zotero does file sync. Zipping the files reduces upload time (since most people have very limited upload bandwidth) and storage requirements. The filenames inside the ZIP files are also base64-encoded, which is necessary to get around lack of Unicode filename support in Firefox's ZIP reading functionality.
  • I created an account at gmx.com, am having trouble configuring Zotero

What are the correct values for the form at

Zotero Preferences -> Sync -> Storage Server

    Thanks,

  • Tick "enable file syncing"
    protocol "WebDav (Secure)"
    URL: https:/storage-file-eu.gmx.com

  • Just an FYI.
GMX has a 1,000 file per folder limit which with large collections means you hit the buffers pretty quickly, I've just discovered :(

Anybody else got any suggestions for free storage that doesn't have this particular limitation?

    thanks, Jon.
  • @Jon Rubin
MyDrive.ch is excellent. has 2 GB free, no file per folder limit, max file size 2GB and you can attach guest users to a particular account. It's working very well with zotero. you can also get additional storage space for which there is a charge of around €0.30 per month per GB

I had to use https://mediacenter.gmx.net/zotero as suggested in the title for URL and not https:/storage-file-eu.gmx.com. Now, it works just perfectly!
  • how do I check the quota of my Zotero account?
  • GMX mediacenter changed URI, new and working is https://webdav.mc.gmx.net/

(The content remained unchanged as was previously at https://mediacenter.gmx.net/).

Good luck and thanks to GMX -
  • great info as gmx doesn't mention this :)

    works fine.

    Thank You

I can confirm http://mydrive.ch working fine with Zotero for free 2gb webdav storage. Additional storage seems very reasonably priced aswell. The servername has to be:

    https://webdav.mydrive.ch

It will prompt you to create the folder /zotero if it doesnt exist.

    Kind regards, Klaus
  • also using MyDrive.ch...but as far as i know, they also have 1000Files/Folder limit...

    Besides that, mydrive.ch works great.
