Zotero Standalone and FF Extension works for 1-2 hours, then freezes constantly
Hello,
I hope you can help me, because I am a huge fan of Zotero, which has become essential for my researching and writing.
This has been happening to me almost every day. I use Zotero for maybe an hour or two without any problems. Then it begins freezing (spinning beach ball) every 30 seconds to 2 minutes, and continues to do this for the rest of the day. It happens regardless of whether I am adding a new entry, typing in a note, or dragging a PDF onto an entry. When I restart Zotero, it sometimes works again, but only for perhaps 30 minutes before starting to freeze again.
I usually use Zotero Standalone, but it also happens when I switch to Zotero on Firefox, and it happens on both my work computer and home laptop (both Macs). I have Zotero set up to sync automatically, but the freezes doesn’t seem correlated to synching, at least as far as I can tell.
The Debug ID for today is: D1009492832. The first part of the day everything went fine, but for the last 45 minutes or so it has been freezing every couple of minutes.
I am running Zotero Standalone 4.0.11 on a Mac running OS X 10.6.8. I have 11,603 items in my library. The size of my zotero folder is 5.14 GB.
Do I have too many entries in my library, or too large of attachments?
Thanks for your help!

From your debug output this doesn't seem obviously related to syncing, but have you tried temporarily disabling auto-sync?
If that doesn't help, I think we're going to need a Debug ID that covers just an example freeze. There's a huge amount of output in the one above, so it's hard to figure out what exactly is going on. Try keeping the pref window open with debug output logging enabled and periodically clearing the output to make sure it doesn't cover extraneous actions. Then if you get it to freeze, submit the output immediately.
I turned off auto-sync and Zotero has not yet frozen on me. However, when I do try to sync it manually, the sync process never completes itself. It gets stuck somewhere along the way (at a different percentage every time), with the green arrow circling. If I mouse over the progress bar, I see a message like this:
96% Complete
Downloading: None
Uploading: 18,000,000,000,000 MB remaining (19/20 files)
It is a different percent complete every time. There are more specific numbers after the 18, but it always in the range of 18 trillion. However, I can still add entries and citations using Zotero while it is trying to sync.
My Debug ID for the latest instance of this is D1816256839. I activated the debugging log and clicked the sync button. It first it proceeded rapidly from 0% to 96%, then it stuck at 96% for maybe 20 minutes. Finally, I clicked the sync stop button and, when the green arrow stopped turning, I stopped the debugging log and sent it to the Zotero server.
One thing to note—in the past I have gotten random error messages that mention iDisk at the same time I was using Zotero. These messages did not seem directly related to anything I was doing on Zotero, however. I also couldn’t see any reason in Preferences why Zotero might be trying to contact my (now non-existent) iDisk account. I'm not sure if this is related to my problems or not.
Thanks for your continuing help!
Then restart Zotero and try the sync again. If you get the same problem again, provide another Debug ID for the sync. You previously had linked files in iDisk, and when Zotero checked those files for one reason or another, OS X automatically translated file requests for those paths into iDisk requests. If you're still experiencing this, we can debug that in a separate thread (and there are some other threads on it, but it's unlikely to be related to this, since Zotero doesn't sync linked files. (I'd also guess that updating to Mavericks would fix it, since iDisk doesn't exist anymore, so new versions of OS X probably don't try to make the network requests.)
