Deleting duplicate and triplicate reference files

In My Library (the one that comes up along the tab at the top), I have multiple entries for the same reference. This is not the case with the My Library that comes up from the Zetro tab at the bottom. Is one local and one on the server? How do I get rid of the multiple entries? The delete button does not work.
  • I'm not clear what you mean by "the tab at the top" - here on the webpage? That should look exactly the same as the one on the bottom, at least once they are synced.
  • But if you haven't synced and your local data is correct, you can do a Restore to Zotero Server from the Sync->Reset pane of the Zotero preferences.

Or you can sync and clean things up in your local library and then sync again.
The delete button does not work.
I don't know what you mean by this. Which "delete button"?
  • I have synced many times. My library in the tab at the top has 72 items, while the one in the panel has 17. There are only 17, the others are duplicates. When I check the box and use the trash can, nothing happens to the duplicates
  • You currently have 232 items (including child items — which you can count in the client for a proper comparison) online, and I show you as having just done a full sync. Do you not now see the same contents in both places?

(Also, just to be clear on the terminology, when you click on the "tab at the top", you're seeing your online library on zotero.org. The "panel" is Zotero for Firefox, a.k.a. the "Zotero client", which is a program that runs on your computer and stores all your data locally. The two sync with each other.)

I'm sorry. I'm new at this and I'm trying hard to make sure I look for answers before asking.

I still have different content in both places; nothing has changed. I don't mind clearing everything and just starting over. I can easily transfer all my files from my EBSCO database folder. How do I do that?
  • As Dan and adamsmith mentioned above, it appears that your syncing is not working.

Make sure all of your sync information is entered correctly: http://www.zotero.org/support/preferences/sync (same username/password as you use to log in on zotero.org). If that doesn't help, see http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/changes_not_syncing

Once you have your sync set up correctly, the items from zotero.org will appear in your local library (i.e. in the Zotero pane at the bottom of your Firefox window), but the current items in your local library will also be uploaded to zotero.org (if they are not already).

So in the end, you should have the same content on zotero.org and in the Zotero pane in Firefox. Once that is done, we can fix your duplicate problem.
  • I have tried everything and nothing changes. When I reset to override the server with local files, nothing appears to happen. The content is the same in the two boxes; it's just that there are many, many duplicates and triplicates.

It looks like the website is currently displaying deleted items in the main list by mistake. We'll fix that ASAP, but try emptying the trash in your local library (where you'll see all those items) and then syncing.
  • It worked! thankyouthankyouthankyou. I've been working on this all day. I'm going to bed now...

OK, yeah, this was definitely a website bug, caused by a change last week. Sorry for the trouble.
