Library entries not showing up when inserting footnote.

I've brought this up before, but never seem to get a useful answer. I have word for mac and use the standalone. There are all sorts of entries that are in my standalone library, but when I use the firefox add-on to word to enter a footnote i can't get the to come up, either with the drop down list or even the classic view. Sometimes it is new sources, but there are sources that I've tried for weeks to enter and they still don't show up. I'm too far along in my dissertation to change now, but I need help now.

You didn't follow up when people responded to you.

First, you're aware that you can cite from Standalone, which bundles the Word plugin, without using Firefox, right? Are you just saying that when you switch to Zotero for Firefox, you don't see the same items that are in Standalone? That wouldn't have anything to do with the Word plugin and would just be due to Standalone and Firefox not sharing the same Zotero data directory, which they do by default (so you would've had to say no to the default). If they're set to different data directories, it's possible you're actually syncing with zotero.org to move data between the two, and if you don't have auto-sync enabled or there's some other problem with syncing items you add to Standalone wouldn't appear in Zotero for Firefox automatically.

If you set Zotero for Firefox to use your existing Standalone data directory — using that page above for guidance — you should see the same data in Zotero Standalone and Zotero for Firefox. You'll know when you've done so successfully because you won't be able to run Standalone and Zotero for Firefox in full mode at the same time.

Also just to clarify, this would also have nothing to do with what you see on zotero.org. The Word plugin can only have what you have locally in whatever client (Standalone or Zotero for Firefox) is open.
  • Thanks for your help. The earlier comments didn't help the specific issues and I gave up too soon last time.

If I try to insert (or edit) a footnote and firefox isn't open, it tells me it can't communicate with firefox. So that seems like my firefox settings are wrong, right? Am I running the firefox add-on for word when I should be using another?

As I look at the data directory for the standalone it seems to be right, but I'm not understanding where to fix the firefox directory. I don't actually knowingly use anything other than the standalone.

    Thanks for your help.
  • OK. So I know where to find the profile info for firefox and it isn't pointed to the standalone, but I'm not understanding how to change it.

That's probably just an outdated message. If you don't use Zotero for Firefox, you could just uninstall Zotero and the Zotero Word integration extension from the Add-ons pane in Firefox, and then make sure Standalone is open when you try to cite from Word.

This is assuming you normally use a browser other than Firefox and have the appropriate plugin installed in that that allows you to save to Standalone. If you use Firefox as your primary browser, you wouldn't want to uninstall Zotero for Firefox, but then we could help you point it your existing Standalone data directory.
  • And once you uninstall Zotero for Firefox, for good measure you should go to the Cite pane of the Zotero Standalone preferences and reinstall the Word plugin from there to make sure you have the latest version in Word.
  • Thanks. I uninstalled and reinstalled and I think it is working now. I appreciate the help.
  • OK, great. To avoid future confusion, I'd recommend going into your Firefox profile directory and deleting the 'zotero' folder. (Just double-check once more that Standalone isn't pointing there.)

That way if you install Zotero for Firefox again, you'll be prompted to share the existing Standalone data directory instead of getting back into this situation again.
  • Great. Thanks.
