Icons missing from search box

Here is a really basic question. I am unable to get the Zotero icons to even show in search boxes. All I get is a star and the only option available to me when I click on it is to "edit this bookmark". How do I get them to show up? Thanks
  • Do you see a book icon to the left of the star on this page?
  • Yes, I see the book icon. Waiting patiently for the next response.

    Thanks,

  • What happens when you click the book icon?
  • Dear Sean and Tjowens,

Thanks for jumping in here to help. Upon further investigation, it seems that I lied in my last email. There was a blue icon, but one that seems related to something that was not a book. Today, the same icon design was there, however this time it was orange (with a couple curvy lines on it an a dot in the bottom left-hand corner). This icon appears along with the star I mentioned last time.

Anyhow, when I put my cursor on it, the message that appears is "subscribe to this page". When I click on the icon, I get asked if I want to subscribe to either an RSS or ATOM. So, it seems that I don't see the book icon.

I have seen that EBSCO Host has been improving it's connection with Firefox, but when I go to the Student Research Centre I still only see the star.

I hope this helps you work out what my issue is.

    Thanks, and have fun today,

  • Are you sure you have Zotero installed? Do you see "Zotero" in the lower right corner of your browser window?
  • Yes, the Zotero icon is in the bottom right corner of the screen. I can open it and see the boxes whetting my appetite to use it. I have added some items to my library, moved items between collections, and even seen bibliographic details in the box on the right, somehow I can't use Zotero as I see it in the demo. The only Zotero icons I see are really the RSS and ATOM icons in addition to the star mentioned above.

Is there an "800 Number for Dummies" I can call that you know of?

So, thanks for asking, but how do you suggest I proceed now?

    Cheers,

  • Dear Dan and others,

Okay, after getting help from a friend, I can see the message "troubleshooting translator issues (Zotero Documentation)". But, the next question is: How do I get to Zotero Preferences and the other mentioned places to possibly fix my problem shown below which I copied from the link Dan gave me.

More hand-holding is required, I guess.

If resetting translators doesn't fix the error, you may have a more general problem with your Zotero database. Return to the Advanced pane of the Zotero prefs and click “Check Database Integrity”. If errors are found, use the DB Repair Tool to fix them.

If none of these solutions solve your problem, please make a new thread in the Site Translators category and provide the name of the site, a URL of an entry that is not working, and any other information you see as relevant.
  • How do I get to Zotero Preferences
Open the Actions (gear icon) menu in the Zotero toolbar and select "Preferences...".
  • Great, I learned something new. But, after checking my integrity and finding no errors, I don't know what to do next.

If then the next instruction is my next move, I'm confused as to what this means. I went to my school library catalog and found an item to add. Once again, no book icon in the search screen, and although I can get the title to show in in the center box below, no bibliographic details show up in the box on the right except the title. No Author, only a Zotero URL and Date.

Perhaps I'm close, but to me I seem just as far away from a conclusion as I was before.

    Thanks,

  • Just to be clear, you tried disabling other Firefox extensions and clicking "Reset Translators and Styles...", and you still don't see a book icon on an Amazon.com book page?

If not, please generate debug output while loading an Amazon book page and send the output to support@zot....org.
