no icon in adress bar after going thru FAQ tips.

I followed the troubleshooting tips from top to bottom. Just switched from Firefox to Safari to increase compatibility with my iPad mini.
Restarted Zotero stand alone and Safari several times.
Tried NY times article, but no symbol in address bar.
Also missing the entry from website symbol in Zotero Stand Alone, which is available in my Firefox add on.
This is the Website I tried: "http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/29/world/asia/us-disrupts-afghans-tack-on-militants.html?hp&_r=0"
This is the Report error: "Report Errors
Zotero Connector has not experienced any errors since it was first started"
The Connector is activated in the Preferences/Extensions Tab.
What am I doing wrong?
  • Also missing the entry from website symbol in Zotero Stand Alone, which is available in my Firefox add on.
that's normal. The way to create a webpage entry for Standalone is to right-click (ctrl+click) in the Safari and select "Save as Zotero Snapshot" (or something similarly worded). Do you have that option available?

In Safari you should see a greyed out Zotero logo to the _left_ of the URL bar on all sites. It becomes active on supported sites like NYTimes. Do you see that icon at all?
  • I do see that icon. It is grey and sometimes has a line through it, indicating online/offline.
I was under the impression, that there should be a symbol in the address bar of the Safari browser. I guess I am mistaken and that feature is only available when browsing with Firefox?! Too bad.
    Thank you for your input.
  • the feature is the same, it just looks differently on Safari. Can you click the icon on the NYTimes page? Does that import the article?
  • The symbol just changed and I was able to import this way. I guess that is it?!
  • excellent, yes, that's exactly the same functionality you'd get on Firefox, just looks a little differently.
  • Awsome. Thank you for your support. Have been trying to solve this problem since 7 a.m. and was getting really frustrated. Now I will be able to sleep :-) and do some real research tomorrow.

The URL bar icon that you see on Firefox is the same as the gray button next to the back/forward buttons in Safari.

When the icon is crossed out and faded, it means that Zotero Standalone is not open. If the icon just has a Z, that means that Zotero Standalone is open, but there is no metadata on the page for Zotero to save. When you navigate to a page like http://www.amazon.com/The-Wealth-Nations-Adam-Smith/dp/1604598913 the icon should turn into a book and you can click it to import the item.

Edit: aaaand I'm slow. Should probably not be watching TV while responding. :-)
  • I've just set up a new HP laptop with Firefox and Zotero. All was going well until a message about cookies appeared in the bottom left hand corner. When I clicked to reject that, the Zotero toolbar disappeared from the bottom line. I've re-installed, rebooted etc but can't get it back. The program has me logged in and I can save citations. The box/book icon comes up in the address bar (as suggested in the thread about the Adam Smith citation) when relevant items are open. What I can't do is get in to manage the program. Any help appreciated!
