Zotero Files

all of a sudden zotero is not showing up on my computer. i tried to add a bibliography and nothing came up. when i search for it in my apps, it says a copy of zotero is already open, but it is not showing up for me at all.

any ideas? I really hope I haven't lost all of my information
  • Remember we can't see your screen, so we'll need a lot more info.
Which Zotero version? What OS? What do you mean by "tried to add a bibliography" and what by "nothing came up" (came up where?).
Have you tried obvious troubleshooting steps like restarting your computers? And anything else relevant. It's pretty hard to lose your Zotero data, so it's unlikely that's the case.
  • So, I finally was able to open Zotero again and it had my data. Now, my plug in has disappeared. I have tried to download and install it again, but it is not working. any suggestions?
  • again, you need to provide more detail. Is "my plugin" the Word plugin? In that case start by re-installing it from the Cite tab of the Zotero preferences.
  • Sorry, yes, it is the plug in for word. It literally just disappeared. I went to the Cite tab and do not see an option to re-install
  • This is Zotero for Firefox or Standalone?
And is the Word Plugin listed under Tools--> adons?
  • yes, it is listed there, but does not have the option to re-install
  • Now it is saying that zotero could not load the component required to communicate with your word processor
  • Right, but if it's listed there, it would be really very surprising if the re-install option isn't available in the Cite tab of the Zotero preferences (under Word Processors).
Beyond that, provide an error report ID after triggering the "could not load..." error:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs#provide_a_report_id
and please do take the time to list all the relevant software and version numbers: OS, Word, Firefox (if applicable), and Zotero
  • at this point I am totally confused. there is definitely not a reinstall button next to anything. I can't understand why something was there for a few weeks and then just disappeared. I don't seem to be able to re-install anything from the web site either. i guess i just won't be able to use it. thank you for your help.
  • I mean - we're happy to try to help you, but I've been asking you for a whole bunch of information that you haven't provided yet, so there is not much I can say.
  • I filed an error report. ID: 1909038012
Im not sure what you are asking for that i am not providing. i said it was plug in for standalone, there is no reinstall option, and I cannot download it again. hopefully this id number will help
  • and please do take the time to list all the relevant software and version numbers: OS, Word, Firefox (if applicable), and Zotero

There's something weird going on with your Zotero installation.

We don't normally recommend this, but try deleting Zotero from the Applications folder and reinstalling it from zotero.org. That's pretty unlikely to help, but it's worth a try.

If you're still having trouble after that, provide a new Report ID after restarting Zotero and opening the Cite pane of the preferences, before doing anything else.
  • will i lose all of the information i have in zotero if i do this?
  • while you should always have a back-up of your important data:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data#backing_up_your_zotero_library
no, a re-install will leave your data in place.
