Retrieve PDF metadata stop working after ubuntu 12.04 upgrade

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and Zotero. After a routine update/ugrade without error messages, the menu item "retrieve PDF metadata is missing". I already checked Preferences->Search and pdftotext and pdfinfo version 3.02pl1 are installed. What am I missing?
I attempt both: firefox plugin and standalone, same behavior.

I started this discussion at https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/21096, receiving the following from adamsmith:

Are you sure you're looking in the right context menu? Remember that you only get that option for top-level PDFs, not for PDFs attached to items.

edit: sorry, I thought you were the original poster. Please start a new thread if you have any follow up questions.

I answered:

Really? I am not sure. I recall I did that many times when I was collecting PDFs, but I do not recall how I was doing that. All I know is that from PDFs stored in my HD I was able to extract journal name, issue, pages and authors for further searching. Now I started a new study, so I started collecting PDFs again. How can I add a "top-level PDF" to see if Zotero's behavior/menu appear differently? Thanks.

Thus, as suggested, I am starting this independent thread looking forward for some suggestions. Is anyone having a similar problem or am I doing something wrong here?
  • Click on the green plus sign and select "Store Copy of File" - select a PDF from your HD that you want to import. You'll now have a top level PDF. If you right-click it, do you get the "retrieve metadata" option? If not, what options do you get?

adamsmith, it seems you are completely right. It worked in my notebook and, as soon as I am close to my desktop, I will try it again. Thanks for the lesson.
  • Great. Now that you know how this is supposed to look like, you can also just drag PDFs into Zotero from your Desktop or any Nautilus window and, when a PDF is already attached to an item and you don't want it to be, you can drag it away from that item to create a top level PDF (that last one is a bit awkward, but it definitely works.
