Unable to save PDF file to Zotero

I only started using Zotero last night so this may be user error.

When I use an online archive like Jstor, the zotero icon appears in the edge of the address bar. I simply click on it and save the pdf files I want this works fine.

However when I went to this page:
http://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/reports/2007/R716.pdf

The zotero icon does not appear?

However on the the page I called this pdf from it does appear?
http://www.rand.org/pubs/reports/R0716.html

I was able to save it by hovering over the pdf link and choosing save as zotero item. But them item is simply saved there is not bibliographic information or anything else.

Is there a way so that I can save the file with fully bibliographic information is such a situation?

Thanks
  • If you want to save a PDF opened in Firefox, you can either drag the favicon (the little thing on the left of the URL bar) to Zotero or press the "Create New Webpage Item from Current Page" button in Zotero, or you can do the right-click --> save link as zotero item thing you did.
In all of those cases you'll have to do the retrieve metadata thing I linked to in your other thread.

You'll never get a URL bar icon when only the PDF is displayed in the browser, but many supported sites (including JSTOR) will download the PDF automatically together with the article information from the article/abstract page.
  • Hi I have been checking the forum on "save to Zotero" for PDFs by different publishers. I am having problem downloading an article from JStor. The answers seem to suggest that standalone might not work well if one is off campus, or some proxy might present a problem. Being new to these, I don't know if I understand what they mean.

I am using Firefox 23.0.1. and Zotero from browser.

Below is the link to our school library article, I can view the PDF in the same window but there is no 'save to Zotero' file icon on that page. So I tried "create web page item ..." as suggested in the forum to create a link. But the title shows the citation attribute values instead of the article's title. I would like to know if this is JStor's problem or a problem in my Zotero set up. And, how do I retrieve metadata correctly?

    Thanks so much.
  • we've never seen that form of URL for JSTOR - you'll get a URL bar icon when you look at this article via
    http://www.jstor.org.proxy.lib.sfu.ca/stable/40398803
and that will save both data and PDF.
How exactly do you end up at the above URL?
  • In the results page of Web of Knowledge, I clicked "where can I get this" article, it then opened a page that shows several links to different publishers.

I first picked JSTOR as I described above but the "save to Zotero" does not save the PDF properly. (the page below also shows the pdf text in an embedded window.)
    http://www.jstor.org.proxy.lib.sfu.ca/sici?sici=07421222%282005%2922%3A3%3C265%3E2.3.TX&

This morning I tried the EBSCO link and it worked just fine.

Maybe this is not Zotero's problem but a problem how different texts are linked differently in our library system. You have helped resolve the save to EBSCO problem earlier. So perhaps I should just stick to EBSCO where possible.

Let me know if I interpret this incorrectly. Thanks.
  • We should be able to fix JSTOR. We just were not even aware that format existed. I believe if you click on any of the tabs (e.g. "Summary") on the JSTOR page you should get a URL bar icon that will work.
We'll fix this so this won't be necessary, but that should do as a workaround in the meantime.
  • You are right that if I clicked on the summary tab in JSTOR, I could download the PDF file. I do look forward to a fix if this can be done.
Such information is useful so that I could move on to new searches, etc. Thank you so much again!
  • A translator fix is now up. Your version of Zotero will automatically update within 24hs, or you can update manually using the "Update Now" button in the "General" tab of the Zotero preferences.

Any further problems let us know & thanks for reporting
  • It works. Thanks!
  • Hi, today I came across this URL from our library in which 'save to Zotero' icon does not show up in firefox.

    http://ejournals.ebsco.com.proxy.lib.sfu.ca/Direct.asp?AccessToken=4Y6YYYB8K6PPC2KBP2U2TBLTJSYY85PYY5&Show=Object

The above URL appeared when I clicked "Linked Fulltext" on the library search result page. 'Save to Zotero' does show up when I view the results.

Hope you have a solution to this. Thank you.
  • Can you provide us with the search criteria? I cannot find any articles with "Linked Fulltext" links. Perhaps there's a difference in our subscriptions to EBSCO
  • Hi,
I had TX "new venture strategy" AND TX strategy, filtered out all except 8 journals.

New Venture Growth: A Review and Extension.
By: Gilbert, Brett Anitra; McDougall, Patricia P.; Audretsch, David B. Journal of Management. Dec2006, Vol. 32 Issue 6, p926-950. 25p.

The following is the search page URL.

    http://web.ebscohost.com.proxy.lib.sfu.ca/bsi/resultsadvanced?sid=b3dac295-23fc-4585-bd92-6a48dd1356b6%40sessionmgr15&vid=23&hid=28&bquery=%28TX+%28%22new+venture+growth%22%29%29+AND+%28TX+%28strategy%29%29&bdata=JmRiPWJ0aCZjbGkwPUZUJmNsdjA9WSZjbGkxPVJWJmNsdjE9WSZ0eXBlPTEmc2l0ZT1ic2ktbGl2ZSZzY29wZT1zaXRl

Hope the above info helps. Thanks.
  • I found it. So when you click on "Linked Full Text", it opens up a PDF. Zotero pretty much never displays an icon for pages where only the PDF is visible (it sometimes does if the PDF is displayed inside a frame). Nothing we can really do at this point - there's just no metadata on those pages for Zotero to grab. You'll have to import the metadata into Zotero from the details page.
  • Okay, good to know. Thank you for looking into this.
