Zotero stops responding

For the past number of weeks, Zotero standalone stops working after it has been left alone for a while. I use a Mac. If I pause in using Zotero, use do some research or something, then go back to Zotero, it doesn't respond and I am asked to quit and restart the program. Before I do that, I have been reporting the error. The last time I reported the error (about an hour ago), I got this error ID number: 1748551392

Does anyone have an idea of what might be going on?
  • Does this happen if you disable automatic sync? (Preferences -> Sync -> Settings, uncheck "Sync automatically")
  • That worked! Thank you, Aurimas!
  • Is your Zotero up to date (4.0.12 for Firefox and 4.0.11 for Standalone)?

Is your Zotero data directory located in the usual place, or have you moved it?

It may be helpful if you could provide a real-time debug log. Try to figure out what's the fastest way to make this freeze happen and do just that without performing any other actions (you can do other things outside of Zotero). Then submit the debug log as described on that page.
  • Your client is doing a full download, so it might freeze for a bit while that completes.

This can happen if your Zotero data directory isn't pointing in the right place (in which case your local library wouldn't have all the data on zotero.org) or if you're syncing a new computer. In either case, try just letting it go for a while.
  • I have not (to my knowledge) moved the data directory (nor do I know what that is), ad I do have the 4.0.11 version of Standalone. But disabling the sync function worked well.

Right, but that's not a fix, assuming you want to use syncing. Try just clicking the sync icon and letting it go for a while.
  • Well, you probably don't want to keep the sync disabled forever, so at some point you will have to perform a complete sync. While you have the automatic sync disabled, I suggest that you click on the green circular arrow in the top right corner of Zotero whenever you're done using the computer and leave it syncing overnight. If it doesn't complete by morning, then there is definitely something wrong.
  • OK, I will try letting it go and then syncing it and seeing what happens. I did check and the data directory is in the proper place. Thanks for all the help! I'll check back in....
  • OK, so I left it alone for the weekend, then enabled automatic syncing again and now Zotero Standalone freezes when I leave it for a few minutes.

I have checked the data direction location and it appears to be in the proper place. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to fix this?

    Thanks!
  • Did you leave it alone for the weekend _after_ clicking sync? If not, then Zotero just sat there doing nothing.
  • OK, I will try that. Thank you.
