Word 2013 / Windows 8 -> cannot find the toolbar

Hi all,

I tried to install the add in for word today, but the toolbar doesn't appear. I tried these troubleshooting options http://www.zotero.org/support/windows_word_plugin_manual_installation_instructions, but these do not seem to be tailored for Windows 8. I could not find the default startup folder of Word with these instructions.

Thank you in advance for your answer.
  • File tab -->Word Options. Click Advanced. Under General, click File Locations.
should definitely work for Word 2013 as well. Windows version doesn't matter. At which point does this not work for you?
  • I am having the same problem.

I cannot find the Zotero toolbar in my Word 2013. The above instructions did not help.
  • As adamsmith says above, "At which point does this not work for you? "
  • Zotero exists and is working properly on my web browser but after downloading the windows word plug in nothing related shows up in my word processor.

So I guess the point at which it doesn't work is right after downloading the word plug in.

I have followed the above instructions to the file locations portion of Word 2013 but it doesn't say anything there about Zotero.

I have also tried reinstalling the word plug in and that did not help.
  • Are you using Zotero in Firefox or Zotero Standalone? If you're using Firefox, the plugin should not have downloaded. It should have prompted you to install instead. If you're using Zotero Standalone, reinstall the plugin via Preferences -> Cite -> Word Processors
  • I am using zotero in Firefox and have just re-installed the Microsoft word add in.
When I open up word I still cannot find any zotero toolbar to work with
  • Where should I see the zotero toolbar in this version of word?
  • Never mind

I restarted my PC and it is now where it should be

    Hi all,

Thank you for your comments, but I cannot get it to work.

"File tab -->Word Options. Click Advanced. Under General, click File Locations.
should definitely work for Word 2013 as well."

On the risk of sounding like a total n00b, but I found the file locations. But what should I do with it? There is not an option to select Zotero.

Also, I have tried again to work with this information. http://www.zotero.org/support/windows_word_plugin_manual_installation_instructions

However, I cannot find the zotero.dot file. There are a lot of zotero files in the zotero folder, but not a specific one that is zotero.dot
  • You want to copy zotero.dot into the folder specified as the startup folder.

If you're seeing multiple zotero files in the zotero folder, you're looking in the wrong folder. This is _not_ the zotero data folder, but the folder you get to by opening your Firefox directory (see the link and then following the path
    extensions/zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org/install
  • While you were typing your answer, I got it to work! And now I got it, I see the logic behind it and now it looks quite sensible to me. Thank for you help anyway!

Maybe I would like to suggest that you could elaborat a little bit upon the general instructions for those of us who are not so tech-savvy? A famous Dutch saying runs like: "you're only seeing it when you get it" [je ziet het pas als je het door hebt] and this applies to these instructions as well. They are very dense for somebody not well versed in this specific logic of files & folders.

    Thank you! :)
  • if you have specific suggestions on which parts need clarification, I'll try to put those in.

"To install the plugin by hand, first install the plugin Firefox extension. Once the plugin extension is installed into Firefox, you can find a copy of the Zotero.dot file in the extensions/zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org/install directory within your Firefox profile. Copy that file to your Word Startup folder. (Be sure to copy the file rather than moving it.)"

    Rework into -->>

To install the plugin by hand, first install the plugin Firefox extension. After that, you have to locate the zotero.dot file. In order to do so, you need to open your firefox profile by following these [add link] directions. You have now an open folder with different files. Follow extensions/zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org/install directory. In the install directory you find the zotero.org file. Copy this file (remember not to move it but to copy it).
This zotero.dot file needs to be copied in the Windows Startup folder.

[Maybe reworking the instructions from here on by first giving the default location, since by most people the default location will do the trick. I thought namely that I had to copy the zotero.dot file somehow into Word itself]

    Hope this helps!
  • I've updated the instructions. Thanks for your input.
  • Hi all,

I have the same problem that i can't install zotero toolbar in word 2007 for windows 8. I have installed the zotero word for windows integration 3.1.15 which is compatible with my zotero 4.0. But when i opened Word options and Add-ins to install zotero toolbar, a message always appeared 'The specified module could not be found'.
    Could you help me please?

    Thanks in advance
  • Hi Adamsmith,
I had the same problem (toolbar didn't appear in Word 2013 in a Windows platform). And I did everything you told us to. But I discover that in the Word 2013 INSTALLED in ITALIAN, the "startup" folder is named "Inicio", so when Zotero installs the plugin, it creates a folder "Startup" and the Word processor never finds it. You will find both folders in the same direction: C:\Users\::username::\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word What I did was, change the .dot file from the folder named "starup" to the folder "Inicio" and everything worked perfectly.

    Thanks
  • the problem with non-English installations is described here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting#toolbar_does_not_appear_in_word_for_windows_or_is_incompatible

and the instructions on the manual installation page do tell you how to find the startup folder regardless of your system's language and specify that
On non-English systems or in certain custom setups, these locations may be different.
  • @lehongluyen - could you start a new thread please? Sounds like a different problem. Also, please expand on: " But when i opened Word options and Add-ins to install zotero toolbar, a message always appeared 'The specified module could not be found'. " What exactly are you doing before that happens?

    Dear friends,

I found the solution, just following this page. It Is in Spanish language, but it works !!!

    http://soportedi.uc.cl/2013/07/problemas-de-compatibilidad-complemento.html#comment-form_8572025499738265956

    Saludos

    Vicente
