Switched to the older view for inserting Zotero citations

And now every time I try to insert a citation, Word and Firefox freeze. I use a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.8. I use Firefox 22.0 and Word 2004 11.6.0.

I decided, for the convenience, to use the older selection tool for selecting a citation (i.e., *not* the red bar with auto correct). Now word and firefox *always* freeze. I would happily undo my selection and go back to the red tool line, but I have no idea how to do that.
  • I tried to enter a citation in a new word document. Word froze temporarily again, and I got this error message:

Zotero experienced an error updating your document
'The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus
    error -1708.) @[insertFieldRaw:document.m:1280]'
    when calling method:
    [zoteroIntegrationDocument:::insertField]
  • You can go back to the quick format bar by unchecking "Use classic view" in the Cite tab of the Zotero preferences.
  • Thanks. I uninstalled zotero and reinstalled it, and now it is working. Out of curiosity, where is the "cite" tab in zotero preferences if I am not using the standalone version?
  • Thanks hugely!
  • It's happening again. But this time I get the message:
"The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error -1708.)@[setTextRaw:field.m:393]' when calling method [ZoteroIntegrationField::setText]

I am using the quick format bar.
  • Same for a new document?
  • Why should it matter though -- the older documents in questions were documents for which Zotero used to work fine.
  • No... those don't seem to apply. I have not used migration assistant on this Mac and I am already using 10.6.8.
  • if this occurs in a new document matter because whether it does or not indicates different types of problems. This is still Word 2004?
The last times the OSS-1708 error came up this was a visual basic problem. Zotero should throw an explicit error, but still, these steps may be able to fix it.

  • Thanks, I'll give them a look.

And while you're at it, you may also try updating Word to the current version, which seems to be 11.6.6 (I believe there's a Check for Updates function in the help menu)
  • Zotero just throws the error that Scripting Bridge returns. The long-form error description is:
Mac OS error -1708 (errAEEventNotHandled): the AppleEvent was not handled by any handler
which unfortunately isn't much more informative. It could mean there's something wrong with AppleScript support in Word, or it could mean that there was an error and Word didn't know how to deal with it. It's happening when Zotero tries to update fields in the document, so it's probably the latter and not the former. It would be helpful to know whether you can get this to happen in a new document and what style you're using.
  • it does appear to occur in a new document: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/31701/switched-to-the-older-view-for-inserting-zotero-citations/#Item_9
  • Yes. It continues to happen in new documents.
  • I don't know if it helps figure this out at all: But the first program to freeze is Firefox. Then a minute or so later word freezes.
  • If Firefox is the first to go, you can try generating real-time debug output. Once firefox freezes, copy the output and send it to support@zotero.org along with a link to this thread.
