Bibliography not showing up as a word document

I installed the word add-in, and it worked fine with my first attempt to cite my articles. The second, and every one since then, has not been created as a word document, but just as some sort of file. What happened?
  • has not been created as a word document, but just as some sort of file.
What do you mean by this? The Word add-in allows you to insert references into a _Word_ document. The way you save the document afterwards is up to you.
  • Yes, the first time i tried it, my references did appear in a word document, and showed up as one on my desktop where i had saved it. After that, all of my other attempts showed up as "file"...and then i had to open the file with word, and convert it.
  • What operating system are you using? Which version of Word?

How are you saving the document? When the save dialog opens up, what do you select under "Save as type"?

    Try this:
    1. Open a new Word document

    2. Insert a reference from your library into some text.

    3. Add a bibliography

    4. Save the document by pressing Ctrl+S, selecting Word Document in the "Save as type" dropdown menu, and entering some file name

    5. Try to open it again and see if that works

  • windows 7, microsoft office word 2007

i right click one of my items, then select "create bibliography from item", then when the pop-up pops up, i have it set for bibliography, and RTF. I click ok, and then when the save dialogue opens up the only choice i have under "save as" is RTF.

I appreciate you trying to help.
  • If you're trying to insert a bibliography into a word document, this is not how you want to do it.

    See http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_integration
  • Thanks, i was able to do it that way. I am still not sure why i cant do it the same as i did before though. Where everything was done from the zotero feature that pops up from the bottom of my browser, like i had talked about above. I am not sure how to include abstracts either.
  • You can save your bibliography as an RTF file, which will open like a regular Word document (and which you can then save as .doc or .docx if you want to.) It will also, on many file systems, be displayed with a Word logo since Word is the default application for RTF files. It sounds like that's what you did initially. There has most definitely never been an option to create a bibliography as a .doc from Zotero itself and there is very little reason for it, since it wouldn't look any different from the RTF.
  • But just to be clear, when you export a bibliography as an RTF file, it becomes a _static_ bibliography. That is, if you wanted to change the style of the bibliography, or if you wanted to insert another reference into a document, or if you were to correct some metadata in Zotero (among other things), none of these actions would be automated. You would have to go back to Zotero and re-export the whole bibliography with whatever changes you want and then paste is back into your document.

If you are using the Word plug-in, everything I mentioned above can be done with a few clicks. So in most cases, this is the method you want to use.
