Zotero Standalone + Firefox Crashing

Whenever I try to open Zotero standalone, it'll work fine for approx 5 sec and then freeze and crash. The same happens to Firefox. I can still save through the Chrome extension. I've tried disabling syncing, disabling the Chrome extension, and re-installing both Firefox and Zotero with no luck.

I'm using Zotero 4.0.11 and Firefox 24.0 on Mac OSX 10.7.5.
  • You're sure this happens with auto-sync disabled?
  • I've unchecked the sync automatically box on standalone. Is there more that I should be doing?
  • No, that would do it. You can try generating real-time debug output for the startup to see if it's actually doing something. If there's output, save it to a text file, ZIP it, and send it to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread, and we'll take a look.
  • (That's assuming you can use Firefox itself without it freezing, in order to access about:config. Or does this happen just when you start up Firefox, not when you open the Zotero pane?)
  • The freeze/crash happens almost immediately after I startup Firefox, so I can't access about:config.
  • You could manually edit the prefs.js file in any text editor with the same effect as about:config (just look for the same property as you would in about:config). I believe it's located one directory above your data directory
  • Are you sure you enabled the debug.log preference? There's a crash in the Standalone output and some very weird output in the Firefox one, but there's no Zotero output at all.
  • Is this on a standard Mac? I don't think we've ever seen the kind of output that you're getting in Firefox (related to OpenCL, a technology that uses the system's graphics card to improve application performance).

Does Firefox itself crash, or just when you open the Zotero pane? Does Firefox crash if you disable Zotero?

If you go to about:crashes in Firefox, do you see entries for these crashes? If so, click through on one of them and paste the Mozilla URL here.
  • Sorry for the slow reply! For some reason I wasn't getting the comment notifications in my email.

I think I enabled the debug.log preference? I was doing it in the 5 or so seconds before Firefox froze, so it's hard to tell. Firefox crashes by itself, not when I open the Zotero pane, so it might be that the two are unrelated - I mostly just noticed because Zotero standalone wasn't working, so I went to use the Firefox version, except Firefox wasn't working either.

I have a standard mac, no modifications.

here is a crash report from today:
    https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/bp-2fb81abe-78b6-4bb7-ab7f-62b752130924
  • Does it happen in Firefox if Zotero is disabled? If so, it's a general problem with the Mozilla framework on your computer and unrelated to Zotero.

The crash from that report is in libFontParser.dylib, so I'd guess that you have a corrupt font on your system that's breaking things. You can try playing around in Font Book, disabling any fonts you've installed, to find the problem.
  • I haven't downloaded any new fonts onto this computer, so I disabled all the fonts fontbook would let me, and that seems to have solved the problem for both Firefox and Zotero :) I'll go back and figure it out which one exactly is the problem later, but thank you so much for your help!
