Can not Sync from My PC after having had on MacBook Pro

I would like to also work on my Home-PC (Windows 7) and added Zotero again to Firefox. Then trying to get the sync data from the MacBook, then Zotero does not accept my password, even if a get it new (tried on "both sides") I get the message:
"Der Zotero Sync Server hat Ihren Benutzernamen und Ihr Passwort nicht akzeptiert

Bitte überprüfen Sie, ob Sie Ihre zotero.org Anmeldeinformationen in den Einstellung zur Synchronisation von Zotero korrekt eingegeben haben."

In the plugins I see the message that Java Deployment Toolkit 7.0.250.17 10.25.2.17 is deactivated and can not be activated.

What can I do please?
Thanks for your kind answer.
Cordially,
Ernest, Switzerland
  • Have you verified that you can use that username/password combination to log in on zotero.org?
  • Thank you, I have "Welcome, Ernst Erb when I log in to www zotero org.
  • I'm very new to this - and would have DropBox, which is not recommended for Zotero?
  • Would deinstall on all ends be an option, since I have nearly no content yet?
  • no, reinstalling is almost certainly not necessary. This almost always happens because of incorrectly entered username or password, but if that's not the case, could you provide a Debug ID for trying to sync.

Thank you, aurimas, that was fast. I get a long list ...
Is the first or the last part important? The most upper two:
    [JavaScript Error: "this.docShell is null" {file: "chrome://global/content/bindings/browser.xml" line: 323}]

    [JavaScript Error: "nicht wohlgeformt" {file: "moz-nullprincipal:{694a4ad2-f954-4353-9272-e2ec7bcc5df3}" line: 12 column: 187 source: "<Url type="text/html" method="GET" template="http://search.babylon.com/?babsrc=SP_ss&q={searchTerms}&mntrId=be63ff940000000000000018f3b4e8eb&tlver=1.8.7.2&affID=110826&tt=0113_3"/>"}]

First is once, the second is 6 times the same, followed by 9 times my first post here. :-)

    Below that:

  • I was told to put in as "Resolver":
    http://sfx.metabib.ch/sfx_locater?
Could that be the problem? I don't understand what it means.
  • The resolver should not matter.

If you follow the instruction on the page that I linked, you should enable debug logging, perform a sync by clicking the green circular arrow in the top right corner of Zotero, go back to the preference window and submit the debug log to Zotero servers, then post the Debug ID (no need to post the actual log here), which should be something that looks like D123456789 (you can select and copy-paste it here)
  • Hopefully I did it right now, sorry: D950094834.
  • Dear aurimas
If you have the time now, I have Skype (under my name in Meggen Switzerland) and TeamViewer8.
  • Sorry, but it's best that we stick to the support forum. Among other reasons, I will not be the only one helping you out. Dan (one of the official Zotero developers) will probably be around shortly to take a look at that Debug ID and will let you know how to proceed.
  • Zotero doesn't do phone/skype support. You'll have to wait until Dan comes around to look at your debug. He'll have more details.
  • Thank you, aurimas, I understand. You seem to work very professionally. :-)
Thank you for your help so far. May be that I have to follow tomorrow. But I will keep up a bit.
  • That Debug ID doesn't appear to cover a sync attempt.

Also, make sure you're entering your Zotero username and password in the top portion of the Sync preferences. There's an error in your debug output about your WebDAV username not being set, so if you're trying to use WebDAV, make sure you're using your WebDAV username and password in the bottom portion. If you're not trying to use WebDAV, fix your settings to use Zotero for file syncing or disable file syncing.
  • Thank you, Dan, I will proceed.
Can I select English for the texts Zotero gives me to be in line what
    http://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output
    gives me as instructions?
  • Sorry, I don't understand your question.
  • On my MacBook Pro I get everything in English, but here on the PC I get everything from Zotero in German and would like to switch it also to English. I saw no language selection, but at least English and German is possible.
  • I could change the language, thank you, Dan.
    Then I proceeded according to
    http://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output
by doing a sync which then puts an orange ! pictogram in front and the debug ID is:

    D1434816360
  • Passwort nicht definiert
According to this you haven't entered your password in the Zotero Sync Server section. If you have, is it still entered when you close the preferences and come back to it? Are you using a master password in Firefox? If so, are you cancelling the master password dialog? Are your passwords for websites being saved properly in Firefox?
  • I DO put in the password manually. I have NO master password allowed.
When I enter the password and then click OK, the window disappears. After clicking SYNC again, it pops up and sais to open sync again and there the field for password is empty again.
The last sentence I don't understand - or don't know what to do to get the answer - since I always put it in (not stored).

Sorry, now I have to go to bed and can follow only tomorrow (Switzerland) afternoon. Thank you for your response. I will compare tomorrow the MacBook pro reactions with the PC reactions. Perhaps this could help.
  • The last sentence I don't understand - or don't know what to do to get the answer - since I always put it in (not stored).
I mean passwords for websites, not for Zotero. Zotero uses the Firefox login manager database to store its password, so a problem with that would affect both Zotero and website passwords.

You can try closing Firefox, moving/deleting signons.sqlite and key3.db from your Firefox profile directory, restarting Firefox, and entering in the password again. That will reset the Firefox login manager and hopefully fix the problem.
  • Dear Dan
Thank you for your good help. We can close it, it is solved!
    Cordially,
    Ernest, Switzerland
  • What fixed it? Deleting signons.sqlite and key3.db?
  • Yes, I found that and deleted both. I then had to choose from 3 different sources (well done!) and later the same thing with the MacBook. Was fun how it works!
  • Hello Dan,
I have the same problem with standalone (chrome extension). Do you have an idea how to fix it?
    Thanks!
  • You can try deleting the same files from your Zotero profile directory. If that doesn't help, you should start a new thread and start at the beginning with a full description of the problem you're facing.
