Update Fails

When I start Zotero a message comes up that says something to the effect of "Update Failed, Please make sure there are no other copies of Zotero running on your computer and restart Zotero." I have also tried to update while the program is running by selecting "Check for Updates" from the drop down menu, but the update never loads. I have version 4.0.9, and that is the only copy of the program I have on my computer. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
  • There was a problem with the updater in Zotero 4.0.9 - just update manually by re-installing Zotero from zotero.org/download. Future updates will work normally again. Re-installing does not affect your Zotero data.
  • Thank you for your response. Do I need to delete the current version of Zotero on my computer before downloading and re-installing the new version? How can I be sure that my data will not be erased (pardon my paranoia)?
  • no, just install the new version over the old one. That won't touch your data folder, but you should have an up-to-date back-up anyway, so if you don't, now would be a good time:

  • Thank you. I thought that the data online was my back up, so I am glad to know how to back up properly.
  • Last question: when I download Zotero from the web site, and then drag it to the applications folder to install it, it asks me if I want to "keep both" or "replace" the current version. I assume I should say replace it -- but again, I want to make sure that won't overwrite my existing data (which I have now backed up, but I would prefer not to have to worry about figuring out how to restore it). Thank you again for your help.
  • replace indeed.
