  • almost there, after choosing one of the JREs in Zotero the texts in the zotero toolbox are actionable.
but still as text, not as icons.

and some peculiar texts about fields being in the wrong format.
the zotero I have is in Portuguese, so I am not surprised the text is in PT, but I have no idea what it means?
I think the document and some old citations where done in 3.x of OpenOffice but since no I have OO4 which does not work with Zotero...

  • any chance that you may have inserted references with a different program - Mendeley or Endnote perhaps - into that document?
Otherwise, the 2nd message would only appear, I believe, if you had created a .doc with Word and used Fields and are trying to use Zotero with that in LibreOffice
  • nope, I do not have mendeley nor endnote.
I might have done some cut and paste from file I made in OO/Zotero in Lubuntu and/or Win7/MS Word.

the current file format is .odt

    btw
    what is a "field"?
with the "backwards P" I do not spot anything special.

In the zotero toolbox there is an option "remove field codes".
    what it is that for?
  • yeah, copying from Word could have done it I guess. OO/Zotero and LO/Zotero work entirely the same way, cross platform.

"Field" is the format in which Word adds active content to documents - Zotero uses it for citations. The equivalence in LO is "Reference Marks". Both are the default, if you need a document to be compatible between Word and LO you need to use Bookmarks (set under "Set Document Preferences").

Remove Field Codes will remove any connection of the document to Zotero, i.e. you wouldn't be able to create a bibliography anymore, any new citation you insert would be treated like the first one etc.
  • pressing "remove field codes" did nothing.
So I saved the documents as .rtf and again as .odt.
Now I can add references without any of the above "error messages".

    btw
is there a way of hiding the "remove field codes" button?
since it has quite serious effects ...
  • no, but it will give you an extra warning before actually removing the field codes.
  • OK
    Thanks for all the input!
Now it seems to be working.
In my case the two main fixes were:
    1. choose a JRE for Zotero
    2. find a way to remove MS Word fields (e.g. save as .rtf, then back to .odt)

Now I just need to figure the formatting of in text references etc, but that is another story ...

    Cheers!
