Zotero won't start--Firefox version (standalone also won't start)

I get the following message when I follow the instructions for reporting startup errors:

Timestamp: 04/09/2013 4:47:28 PM
Error: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80630002 (NS_ERROR_STORAGE_IOERR) [mozIStorageService.openDatabase]" nsresult: "0x80630002 (NS_ERROR_STORAGE_IOERR)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/db.js :: Zotero.DBConnection.prototype._getDBConnection :: line 1108" data: no]

Thanks.

  • Thanks Adam. I do have my data directory on my university's network, so I'd like to try making it local and see if that fixes the problem.

    How can I change the Zotero preferences when I can't get Zotero open?

    (I haven't tried putting the files in the Zotero directory yet because I'm off-campus, and realize now that I don't actually have access to those files--I thought I did.)
  • You can delete prefs.js from your Standalone profile directory (which is one directory up from the default Zotero data directory location) and restart Zotero. That will clear your custom data directory setting and also your sync username, which should avoid an auto-sync to the (presumably empty) default data directory location. You'll need to copy your files from the network location to the default location or another local custom one.
  • I don't know if this is relevant to this thread but my computer, with Firefox 21.0, gets stuck when I try to add the Firefox extension to the Standalone version. This is the preferred set up my university has instructed us to do. It keeps saying the extension is downloading but the download never finishes. Any suggestions/help will be much appreciated. Thanks.
  • could you clarify what you're trying to do? I'm not quite sure what adding the Firefox extension to the Standalone version means.
  • I use Firefox as my default/main browser. When I clicked on the Download button on the Zotero home page it guides me to two different download options - Zotero for Firefox and Zotero Standalone. Under the Standalone version is an option to add a Firefox browser extension. When I click on this it first says that "Firefox prevented this site (zotero.org)from asking you to install software on this computer." I then click on the "Allow" button and it says "Add-on downloading" and the file size seems to be 5.0 MB. The green progress bar just keeps moving and the system says "A few more seconds" but the download never finishes. How can this be remedied?
  • Ah OK. Just generally, you should always update Firefox to the most recent version (23 in this case), though it's not very likely to make a difference here. But do try restarting your computer after that re-install and try downloading Zotero again.
  • Thanks Dan and Adam--I've sorted out my network problems and have Zotero back! I really appreciate your timely help.
