Not downloading

I have been trying to download zotero standalone for windows for a while and I am always getting this same result:
This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

I am trying to acces by the download link of the webpage, any ideas on what is going on and how can I solve this?
  • (FWIW, I get a malware block when trying to download the Windows client from CU Boulder). The other clients download fine.
  • Yeah I got that too but in another post arimas said it is a false positive, so I ignored it..
  • right, but mine is blocked by the ISP (the university). They tend to be rather conservative about that or at least they should.
  • gaborio: This is from http://www.zotero.org/download/ ?

What's the exact URL you're trying to download? The Windows client downloads fine for me.

adamsmith: Does the error message say what the AV vendor is?
  • no, but I can ask, unless you want to. Here's the full message:

This web site ( http://download.zotero.org/standalone/4.0.11/Zotero-4.0.11_setup.exe ) has been blocked because it has been determined by Web Reputation Filters to be a security threat to your computer or the campus network. This web site has been associated with malware and/or spyware.

    Threat Type: othermalware
Threat Reason: Domain reported and verified as serving malware. URI found to serve malware.

If you have questions, please contact the IT Service Center at help@colorado.edu or call 303-735-4357 (5-HELP from a campus phone), and provide the codes shown below.

    Notification codes:

(1, MALWARE, othermalware, Domain reported and verified as serving malware. URI found to serve malware., BLOCK-MALWARE, 0x06d75867, 1377735669.298, AAAEKgAAAAAAAAAAHP8ACP8AAAD/AAAAAAAAAAAAAAE=, http://download.zotero.org/standalone/4.0.11/Zotero-4.0.11_setup.exe, -7.2)
  • Ugh.

But you don't get the same sort of AccessDenied message that gaborio gets, do you? Because that one looks like a 404 from Amazon, which would be odd (unless there's a problem with a particular CloudFront region).

gaborio, what did you mean by "I got that too"?
  • though I'm guessing this might be CISCO?
  • Yeah, looks like it.
  • I kind of doubt they have an external contact for this, so you might want to report that to the university.
  • (Or we can.)
  • gaborio is referring to this: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/31555/?Focus=164222

I don't get the access denied message, no (only time I've ever seen this is when trying to access old versions of Zotero and mistyping something) - but also, CU just won't let me go there, period. The text quoted above is the entire content of the webpage they put up when I try to download and there's no opt-out.

I'll try talking to them, will let you know if I hear back. (done)
  • Interestingly, when scanning with VirusTotal, the file linked above came up with a hit from Symantec (WS.Reputation.1), but when the scan was completed with all of the AV engines, the hit disappeared and Symantec started reporting that it's ok.
  • Sorry it took so long for me to reply,

I don't have the AV problem any more, I am still getting the 404 problem and yes I am using this link:
    http://www.zotero.org/download/

I tried clearing my cache and browser data, but still, I also tried it from another network and got the same problem. I am going to try from a different computer.
  • Right, but what's the exact URL of the download itself?
  • OK, this looks like a problem on Amazon's end, then—specifically with a regional server in their content delivery network, which we use for Zotero downloads. (That would explain why it also failed for you from another, presumably geographically close, network, but works fine for others.)

I've flushed the regional caches for that file, so try again now. If you still get an error, post the error message again and I'll report it to Amazon.
  • I guess it could be a DNS problem as well. If it still doesn't work, open the command line (run 'cmd') and type this:

    nslookup download.zotero.org
Then copy and paste the output here. (To do that, right-click in the cmd window, Select All, and right-click again, and the contents of the window should be on the clipboard.)

  • on the other hand I was able to download it on my tablet (on the same wifi network) and send the .exe to my computer so I have installed it but the link is still not working.
  • Weird. Did you try it from different browsers on your computer?

Glad you got it sorted out, though. If we hear another report of this, we can investigate further.
  • never got an answer from IT, but it's working again for me through CU as well.
