IEEEXplore translator fails to save pdf in specific cases

I'm using zotero mainly with IEEEXplore and normally it runs without any problems, but lately I have noticed that for some articles, zotero does not capture the pdf. As far as I was able to test, it seems to occur only with pages where there is not only a "Full text as pdf" button but also a "Full text in html" button.

Two examples of this:
http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/articleDetails.jsp?tp=&arnumber=5746346&queryText=A+0.27V+30MHz+17.7nJ/transform+1024-pt+complex+FFT+core+with+super-pipelining

http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/articleDetails.jsp?tp=&arnumber=6177104&queryText=A+25MHz+7μW/MHz+ultra-low-voltage+microcontroller+SoC+in+65nm+LP/GP+CMOS+for+low-carbon+wireless+sensor+nodes

In both of these cases, zotero translates the info on the page well, but does not capture the pdf. The zotero button says "Save to zotero (IEEE Xplore)", so zotero does see it's an ieeexplore page. I'm using zotero 4.0.12 on firefox 17.0.8.
  • Try to upgrade Firefox. Does that help (I can't test it at the moment)?

both work for me. Make sure your translators are up to date (general tab of the Zotero prefs). Are those the URLs as you seem them or did you remove a university proxy?

edit: and what Gracile said if at all possible. There have been some minor issues with the ESR release in the past, although obviously it's supported in general.
  • Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately, I cannot upgrade Firefox (we have no admin rights). I made sure the translators were up to date, as you said, but that does not seem to make a difference. The URLS are as I see them, I did not remove any proxy. Any other ideas?

When I start translating, there appears a box in zotero, where it says "Saving to..." and after a while there appears a red cross in front of the "IEEE Xplore Full Text PDF".
  • First, check no. 7 here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues
    (you can ignore the rest)
    If that doesn't help,
provide a debug ID that covers everything from you clicking on the url bar icon to the red cross appearing before the pdf attachment in the pop-up
    http://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output
  • I checked no. 7, but the settings were correct. Therefore, this is the debug ID: 1464867651.
    Thanks!
  • That looks like a report ID. We need a debug output ID http://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output - it will start with "D". Make sure you have the debug run from the moment you click the URL bar icon to the moment the red cross appears for the PDF.
  • Oh sorry - there was a D before, I forgot to type it. So it was D1464867651.
  • @Dan - what does this return for the PDF? Anything else useful?
  • [JavaScript Error: "[Exception... [JavaScript Error: "itemProgress is undefined" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/browser.js" line: 579}]
That first error shouldn't be possible given the code we use, and the second error has been reported by other Firefox 17 users, so I think these are due to bugs in Firefox 17. If you can't upgrade, unfortunately I think you'll need to wait for your IT department to upgrade to Firefox 24 (the next Extended Support Release), which should be out on September 17th.
