Style Error: Journal of Physical Chemistry C

Has anyone used Zotero for JPC C before? Style guide is at the bottom.

Problems:
-Style currently doesn't put the titles in title case for me (e.g. The Big Snow vs. The big snow).
-Includes book page references extraneously
-Articles with more than 10 authors need to be shortened by et. al.

Examples:

Journal references should contain author names, article title (written in title case), abbreviated journal title, year, volume, and pages (first−last):

McMahon, D. P.; Cheung, D. L.; Troisi, A. Why Holes and Electrons Separate So Well in Polymer/Fullerene Photovoltaic Cells. J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2011, 2, 2737–2741.

For work published online (e.g., ASAP), the DOI should be furnished in addition to the standard bibliographic information. The DOI is an accepted form of citation before and after the article appears in an issue.

Brown, A.; Ngai, T. Y.; Barnes, M. A.; Key, J. A.; Cairo, C. W. Substituted Benzoxadiazoles as Fluorogenic Probes: A Computational Study of Absorption and Fluorescence. J. Phys. Chem. A 2011, DOI: 10.1021/jp2079296.

Book references should contain author names, book title (written in title case), publisher, city, and year:

Datta, S. Electronic Transport in Mesoscopic Systems; Cambridge University Press: Cambridge, U.K., 1995.
  • I see 1 and 3, but what do you mean by:
"Includes book page references extraneously"? Zotero doesn't have a page field for books and the numPages field isn't used in the style.
  • I think it is easily corrected by not including a page reference, but JPC C does not want you to include a subset of pages from a book for some reason. For example instead of citing page 100-104 in the reference they would like you to just cite the whole book if I am not mistaken.
  • sorry I'm being dense, but I just don't see how you'd cite page 100-104 for a book in Zotero's JPC C style? Do you mean a book section? That'd be for a chapter in an edited volum and while JPC C's style guide doesn't have anything on that, ACS has this example:
Almlof, J.; Gropen, O. Relativistic Effects in Chemistry. In Reviews in Computational Chemistry; Lipkowitz, K. B., Boyd, D. B., Eds.; VCH: New York, 1996; Vol. 8, pp 206–210
  • Ah ok I think I just entered that incorrectly.
  • Do you know how to fix the title case thing? That is the most crucial
  • yeah, I'll definitely fix the title casing. I'll also fix the et al, but we're still talking about the details of how to distinguish between ACS journals using et al and those that don't. But all of this should happen quite soon, almost certainly during this week.
  • The style is now fixed. The updated version will appear on the repository within 30mins (check the timestamp). Update your copy of the style by re-installing it from the repository. (See here if you need instructions for installing styles in standalone.)

Styles should also update automatically within 24hs for Zotero 4.0+
In an existing document, you may have to switch to a different style and back for the changes to take effect once the style is updated.
Any further problems please let us know.
  • oh, and unfortunately, the ACS styles aren't in the greatest condition, so do let us know if you find other issues, with this or other journals.
  • Awesome, thanks so much
  • It also glitches when it pulls citations from APS journals sometimes. APS journals like Journal of Applied Physics have article numbers for each article rather than individually numbered pages. So each page has the same six digit article number with a dash and then the page number

    e.g. page 1 of article is 114513-1
    page 2 is 114513-2
    etc.

So for citations in JPC C they have you only include the article number without the dashed page numbers.

Sometimes does this, but sometimes I get stuff like 114513–114513–12 rather than just 114513.

This may just be a APS problem rather than a Zotero problem but I thought that I might as well add this here.

The title case change worked seamlessly.
  • could you post the URL for a sample of this to a new thread?
  • got it - we'll fix that, but in the meantime, if you're using Zotero for Firefox you can right-click on the URL bar icon and select "Scitation" (the content management system used by AIP) and get better results.
  • Ah ok great thank you.

I was using chrome but that is fine
  • A translator fix is now up. Your version of Zotero will automatically update within 24hs, or you can update manually using the "Update Now" button in the "General" tab of the Zotero preferences.

Any further problems let us know & thanks for reporting
