No errors, but files are no downloading into library

I cannot find any answers in the syncing forum that relate to this, so please hear me out. If in my panic I missed a post that solves this, please send it my way.

I am using a university database to pull articles from journals. I am using Standalone with a zotfile add-on. I am using it with Firefox. When I hit the icon in the search bar to save my file, the balloon at the bottom of the page tells me it is saving to my library and goes through the normal process of saving the citation and the snapshot and the pdf.

The problem is they are not in my library. They are not in the trash. I hit the green sync icon and it spins and stops and nothing syncs. I saved about 10-15 files in there today, and nothing is coming up. There are no errors popping up. I have 272 files in my library, and the number has not changed.

What is going on? Thanks for any advice.
  • I am also using Firefox, even though it is Standalone.
  • Clock on Zotero icon in Firefox (bottom right). Are the items there?
  • I do not have that Zotero icon. I know what you are talking about, but it disappeared a while back.
  • Your Add-on bar is probably hidden. You can make it appear via Firefox Menu -> Options -> Add-on Bar
  • Yes, they are there under the status bar. Thanks!

Glad you found the items, but clearly Zotero should be more convenient to use than having your items in two different places (and it is).

If there are not that many items in the Firefox version of Zotero and you can easily add them again to Zotero Standalone after this, then you can skip this step. If you do want to keep the items that show up in both places, then you need to sync both of your libraries with zotero.org first (Standalone and Zotero for Firefox have different settings, so you need to set up sync for both).

Once that is done, follow the instructions here: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/30341/firefox-extension-donesnt-connet-to-the-standalone-application/#Item_2

Except, because your Zotero Standalone should probably be more complete, I would do the first part for Zotero for Firefox and the second part in Zotero Standalone.

Edit: forgot to mention why this is happening. When you install Zotero Standalone and Zotero for Firefox is already installed (or vice versa), Zotero should ask you when first launched whether you want the two to share data directories. If you select yes, both versions operate on the same database. Furthermore, when Zotero Standalone is open and you are using Firefox, the Zotero add-on in Firefox becomes a browser Connector for Zotero Standalone (much like the add-ons for Chrome, Opera, Safari). So adding items from firefox goes directly into Standalone. I'm guessing that you either said No to sharing data directories or, for whatever reason, you were never asked.
