[Ask for help]Cannot save amazon site to my library.

Hi, this is my first time using zotero on firefox browser. Well my first try of saving some amazon.com pages(http://www.amazon.com/Multimodality-Semiotic-Approach-Contemporary-Communication/dp/0415320615/ref=pd_sim_b_4 and some other links) failed. I clicked the book icon but nothing has been saved into my library. :(
Any one can help? Thanks!

  • what exactly happens when you click the book icon and where are you looking at your library?
  • Hi there, thanks for your reply.

I clicked the book icon and it showed "saving to my library" at the right bottom. After that I clicked "zotero"at the down right corner and My Library column showed up. But the data was not in it.

I've tried Google Books, and it worked fine with the book data there...
  • when saving an item works, you'd see not just "Saving to Zotero" but also (potentially after a little while) the title of the item you're saving in the same pop-up.
Just out of curiousity, could you just try this again? You might have just hit a bad time.
  • Hi, I've tried again...still not working on Amazon.com :(
it showed "saving to(and one book icon here)my library..." at the right bottom of the page without any title and nothing new appeared in my library column after the pop-up disappeared.

Is it possible that I need to change general setting or something? btw, I'm using the "Zotero for Firefox" version. maybe I should use the standalone one?

    many thanks~
  • No, Zotero for Firefox is better for debugging this. Can you provide a Debug ID for a save attempt that fails?
  • Hi,the ID is D1007972322. I followed the instruction steps, hopes its correct.

    Thanks:)
  • That Debug ID doesn't appear to cover a save attempt. Can you try again?
  • The Debug ID is D64951311. Thanks ;)
  • I can save successfully from that page, but it takes a few seconds. Can you generate another Debug ID just for clicking the book icon on that page (not for loading the search results or for clicking through to the page) and then for waiting at least a minute? It shouldn't take anywhere near that long, but it'd be helpful for troubleshooting to see the output for that much time.
  • The Debug ID is D585763006.

This time, I clicked the book icon twice. First time I've waited for about 3 minutes until the pop-up disappeared. The second time, for about 1 minute(the pop-up disappeared earlier than the first time).

    Thanks again!
  • do you have any other Firefox add-ons installed? If so, disable them, restart Firefox and try again.
  • I've installed two add-ons: on is Zotero 4.0.9; the other is Zotero Word for Windows Integration 3.1.13. and I've disabled the second one. But still no..

    Here is the information shown:
    "The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."
  • anything unusual about the way your connecting to the internet? Maybe a proxy that could be malfunctioning, a particularly strict firewall, something of the kind?
The site linked to above works smoothly for me (and, presumably, others).
  • No..I'm not using proxy and I disabled the firewall but still cannot access..
    Really strange...
I think I'll just use other websites to search and save data.

    Thanks a lot!
  • I have the same problem at home. I reinstalled Zotero Standalone, Firefox and eventually the Windows system but all that was of no help to the Zotero-Amazon puzzle.

Anyway, I can still import Amazon records at office...

philplus: The same problem meaning that you can't load http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=isbn:0415319153&=Search&qt=results_page in Firefox? (If not, start a new thread with a Debug ID for a save attempt.)

This isn't really a Zotero issue at all. If you just can't load the WorldCat site, that's a serious problem somewhere between your system and WorldCat's servers.
  • Is there anyway we can check the connection between WorldCat's server and the computer system?
  • we can't really help with that, unfortunately, as it's not a Zotero issue but much more general in nature.
  • Just to be sure, though, are you able to load that URL in another web browser?
  • Thank you Dan. I have been unable to import Amazon book info, but I have not tried WorldCat yet. I encountered this problem once or twice in the past but it recovered shortly. I hope this time it is also due to some temporary problem of web connection but the situation has lasted much longer...:(
  • philplus: Just click on http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=isbn:0415319153&=Search&qt=results_page

Does it load? If so, then your issue is unrelated and you should start a new thread.
  • That's alright. Thanks anyway!
  • I am having a related problem. I save in Zotero with Firefox and get a message in the corner of the screen stating "saving to library," but then the citation does not show up in my library. Is there a long delay in posting to the library? Anything else to try? Many thanks.
  • from which page?
  • From any page from which I am trying to save a citation. One example:

    http://www2.ed.gov/pubs/NatAtRisk/risk.html
  • the message at the bottom right - does it contain the title of the page you're trying to save?
  • Then it's going into your library. Where are you looking? Online on the webpage? In that case see http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/changes_not_syncing

If you're looking in the Zotero software at the bottom of Firefox, I'm almost certain the items are there - sort by date added in the middle panel and check again.
