Zotero freezes, word freezes, and firefox freezes.

I use a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.8. I installed zotero on firefox a while ago, but never used it. Today, before starting a larege writing project I decided to use it, so I updated the version I had installed, installed the add-on to allow it to communicate with Word. I use Firefox 22.0 and Word 2004 11.6.0. The first time I tried to insert a citation from zotero, firefox froze. Then word froze. I tried again. Same thing. And again. So I disabled the zotero add-on, and installed the standalone version. Similar results. First the stand alone froze; then word froze. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Can you generate real-time debug ouput while inserting a citation and email it to support@zotero.org?

  • I'm not sure whether that was right... and I'm not sure if I can reproduce the problem reliably. It stopped happening yesterday. It started again today, and then it stopped after I restarted the machine. The next time it happens I will try to send a real-time debug output.

What version of Zotero are you using? Some older versions of Zotero will not work properly with newer versions of Firefox.

There have been security updates to 10.6.8. The most recent update was this year. Is your OS up to date?

MS no longer supports Office 2004 as they consider it too old. Does your Word have all patches installed? I seem to remember that earlier versions of Word 2004 had problems with plug-ins.

Is your computer an Intel model or is it an earlier version? (10.6.8 answered my question)

Although your system may not seem so to you, it is old. Please consider installing LibreOffice. It is free. It works quite well with both versions of Zotero (you will need the proper Zotero connector). It is much more powerful and easier to use than Office 2004. You can open Word 2004 documents and then save them in the LibreOffice format. (In your case, considering the problems you are having, please try first using a new LibreOffice document. Because you are having problems with a particular Word 2004 document, I recommend copy/paste instead of opening it in LibreOffice.)
  • I'll give it a try. I believe that my W2004 is up to date. I have avoided switching to a newer version of Word because I find the newer versions less intuitive, more cumbersome, and much, much larger.
  • jdmfine: Word 2004 should work fine. Wait to see what Simon says.
  • I feel like a broken record here. But everytime I start a new document, the same freezing problem happens. Still. Again and again.
