Cannot Sync error #1374586037148

Hi.

I have a large file (14,630 citations) that I finally (3+ hrs) got into Zotero (Firefox version) from a txt file in dropbox. I need to get it online into my Zotero group library. However, it dies everytime I try to sync. I have even tried breaking it up into smaller parts and syncing and that dies too. Any ideas about what to do?
  • 1) That's not a valid Report ID.

    2) What's the problem, exactly? What does "it dies everytime I try to sync" mean?

    3) If you tried the import multiple times—presumably deleting items from previous attempts—did you empty the trash?

Hi Dan. I have a large file that I imported into Zotero (with firefox). I cannot sync either the entire big file or a smaller (500 citations) file that I tested. The sync starts, runs for 20 minutes, and stops with an error. I checked the trash on my machine and there were a few files (15?) in it, and I deleted them and the files online as well. The sync (on the smaller file only) returned the following error with no results online. Does this information help? Thank you. Stacy

[JavaScript Error: "Error: Empty response from server. Please try again in a few minutes." {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/sync.js" line: 638}]
  • Zotero has its own trash at the bottom of the left hand panel. Did you empty that?
  • Yes. I emptied the trash for my library and for my group.

I'm not sure what you mean by this, though. You can't just sync a file—you sync items in your Zotero database once you've imported the file. So what did you do, exactly? Import some items, try to sync, delete them, and then import another? Or something else? If you deleted a large number of items, you should start from scratch with an empty database, by deleting the zotero.sqlite file in your Zotero data directory, and then reimporting the smaller chunks, syncing after each one. (This is assuming you haven't made other changes locally.)

And we still need a valid Report ID. The Report ID is presented clearly in red after you submit the error report.
  • Hi Dan,

Thanks for your advice. My last report id was: 1054527706, but I have tried many things to get my data synced. I just tried your idea of importing the file a section at a time and it both imported and synced the first time, and the sync is still running for the second file. I am concerned that things will slow down as I go along (there are 12 files with about 1200 items in each one). But at least I am making progress. I greatly appreciate your help. Thanks, Stacy

Large uploads aren't instantaneous. It looks like the two you've done so far today took about 10 minutes each (not counting file uploads with the blue progress bar, which are limited by your upload speed). The first one would've taken longer because it had to download the items in your group library first, but the upload itself was only 10 minutes. Nothing to worry about. Let us know if you have any further trouble.
