Zotero toolbar appears in MS Word - but empty, without any tools

I am using the latest version of Zotero standalone (v. 4.0.8) and an English-language version of MS Word (Word 2010, not a Starter Edition), running on a Windows 7 64-bit machine. I use the standalone version because I don't use the Firefox browser.

Although I do have a Zotero toolbar in MS Word, it has no buttons on it. Months ago (with an earlier version of Zotero but the same machine and, to the best of my recollection, the same installation of MS Word) there were buttons on this toolbar, allowing me to add references from Zotero into text documents etc. Now they are missing, and Zotero is much less useful to me for their loss.

I have not seen this problem posted elsewhere. I have run the troubleshooting steps (http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting) that appeared relevant to my case, including those below.

When I go to Zotero's Tools: Options...: Cite: Word Processors: Microsoft Word, I am told that "The Microsoft Word add-in is currently installed." If I run the "Reinstall Microsoft Word Add-in" button (after first closing MS Word), then I'm told that "Installation was successful". But the Zotero toolbar in MS Word remains empty, as I confirm upon reopening Word.

I found two copies of Zotero.dot on the machine, one in C:\Users\::username::\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\Startup\, the other in C:\Program_Files_(x86)\Zotero_Standalone\extensions\zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org\. The first location is my MS Word Startup directory, as I confirm by hitting the Microsoft Office Button and then selecting Options: Advanced: General: File Locations...: Startup.

I deleted the first copy of the two above, after first closing Zotero as well as MS Word. Then when I reopened Zotero and attempted to hit the (now-remained) "Install Microsoft Word Add-in" button, I am again told "Installation was successful", and a copy of Zotero.dot is restored within my MS Word Startup folder, but again the toolbar remains empty, as I confirm when reopening MS Word. This outcome remained the case when I repeated these steps after rebooting my machine.

I'd appreciate any suggestions you could provide for restoring my Zotero tools!
  • I'm not quite sure I understand. So you have the toolbar, but it doesn't have any icons? How does it look? (if you take a screenshot and post it to a free image hosting site like imgur.com you can post a link here)

Thanks; a screenshot of my MS Word window, sans Zotero tools, is here: http://imgur.com/FqPN7DQ .
  • nothing in the add-ins tab, either?
  • Aha! There they are. But why have they moved there from the Zotero toolbar (and are not restored by reinstallation of the Zotero add-in)?
  • I have no idea where the Zotero tab came frome in the first place. The Zotero tooblar is supposed to be in the add-ins tab (where it is in your current set-up).
