Cannot Sync Zotero in Firefox 22.0

I recently updated to Firefox 22.0. For a moment, there were two versions of Firefox running simultaneously on my PC. I deleted the earlier version, but now when I try to sync Zotero, Firefox freezes (Not Responding).

The Debug ID is D2139280506.

Please help!
  • I ran the Debug console, and it appears the error is:

    <response version="9" timestamp="1372723646"><locked wait="5000"/></response>

zotero(3): Associated libraries are locked -- waiting 5000ms before next check

    zotero(3): ===>false<===(boolean)
  • You have a very large queued download on the server—a full download of all your libraries, which includes a very large group library.

I'm not sure what you mean re: the two versions of Firefox, but it sounds like maybe you ended up in a separate profile? Are your bookmarks and cookies still there?

First, disable auto-sync in the Sync pane of the Zotero preferences, which you can access via the Firefox add-on manager without opening the Zotero pane.

Then open the Zotero pane, which should work without freezing, and see if your Zotero data is there. If not—and assuming this isn't a new computer—see http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data#where_did_my_items_go for info on finding your old data directory, which would avoid this large re-download.

    Thank you for your help!

By two versions of Firefox, I mean that somehow I had two versions of the Firefox application on my desktop (one was 21.0, the other was 22.0). I don't know how this happened, but it was at this point that Zotero started to freeze when syncing. I had IT come and delete the earlier version of Firefox, but then my profile, as you suggested, got lost.

I found the old profile data and added it to the new profile. I deleted the old profile. I made sure that Zotero was looking in the correct folder for the new profile data: this solved the problem of the large download queue because my group libraries were back!

However, when I try to sync, Firefox still freezes. It freezes before I can get the debug logging/ID. And bringing up the Real-time Debug Output in console brings up masses of quickly moving text-- unreadable.

Any thoughts on how I can salvage this?
  • as for freeze - how long have you let it run? Zotero may freeze Firefox for a while during large syncs.
  • Freeze as in the application fades out and "Not Responding" even if I wait 10+ minutes.
  • If there's real-time debug output when you check, it's not actually frozen. Just let it go. You're in a very large library, so it could take a while. (Don't leave real-time debug output on, though, since that will make it much slower.)

If you restored your local library it shouldn't actually need to do a full download, so I'm not sure why that's happening, but if you're sure that was your previous data directory, the best you can do is wait it out.
  • Oh, actually, it's no longer doing a full download—it's a relatively small one, actually, but it does include the removal of a group library. If that was a large group library, it could potentially take a long time as your local client deletes the items.
  • OK, I left the sync on despite the freezing and you are right-- the deletion of that library seems to have been the problem.

Thank you so much for your help!
