Citation error in Word caption style

Hello-
I am creating a Word document with multiple Word styles. One style is the "caption" style, used to automatically create a list of tables and figures at the start of the document. Citations inserted into the captions always are reproduced with an additional number and parentheses appended. For example, (Smith 2011) in the inserted field would become (Smith 2011)1). The error is always a repeat of the last digit of the year.

I am using Mac Word 2011, and Zotero standalone 4.0.8. This error remains after changing Zotero styles. I have fixed it with Find and Replace in Word, but the error returns each time there is a refresh of the Zotero fields.

Thanks for ideas. Apologies if this has been discussed already.

  • I don't think Zotero should let you insert citations in captions in the first place - are you able to? Or are you copying citations (which you shouldn't).
  • I can insert citations into Word's "Caption" style using the Zotero menu or control-option-a. I thought the Word styles are simply a means of applying formatting, so this would not be a problem. The issue may be that each figure and caption is in a table cell (which allows me to fix their location on a page, rather than having them move around in-line). Sometimes the error does not occur, and sometimes the letters AM are appended at the end of the citation. This does not occur in the main body of the text, which has the Normal style. Being able to use citations in figure captions is really useful, so any help would be appreciated.
  • the problems are likely table cells, not the caption style then. I don't think this was every fully solved, but there are other reports of AM appearing after citations in tables here:
    https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/27925/zotero-adding-am-after-citation/
    and first post here:
https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/22941/inserting-a-citation-into-a-table-in-jama-style/ (rest of that thread is irrelevant)

    - not even sure how reliably it can be reproduced.
  • The post by Eureka_1 solves the issue, I think. The table cells in my document were once saved to an older version of Word (.doc), which is now updated to .docx. If I insert a new table, copy the contents into it, then delete and re-insert citations, the issue does not repeat. I'll repost here if the problem re-appears.

    Thanks for the help.
