WorldCat not working for Chrome and Firefox

Hi,

The webpages that don't work (had noticed that before, and went to borrow direct, but borrow direct has the same issue of the translator either not showing up (on the detailed page of the reference I'm looking for) or not working (on the list of items showing up as a result of a search).

Chrome: Version 27.0.1453.116 m

I've tried to update and reset translators already on Chrome and on Firefox.

Thanks for your support!
  • If you hover over the URL bar icon as described under 6. here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues
    what does it say?
  • There is none - but worldcat is supported by zotero. Is it due to the fact that Penn makes it go through FirstSearch? It seems to me that it used to work - and I am positive that borrowdirect worked for me before.
  • Both Open Worldcat and the FirstSearch version work with Zotero. It's the nature of the proxy that breaks this: If you look at the URL, Penn makes the entire domain name (typically something like firstsearch.oclc.org) disappear so Zotero doesn't recognize the page anymore.
This _might_ still work if you use Firefox, but definitely not in the connectors (Chrome/Safari). It would work wherever you don't need the proxy, e.g. on Campus or if you're able to go through a VPN connection.
  • This sounds like an issue that I'm having, and I'm guessing that Cornell library is breaking up the URL just like Penn. Like so:

    http://newfirstsearch.oclc.org.proxy.library.cornell.edu/WebZ/FSFETCH?fetchtype=fullrecord:sessionid=fsapp8-46026-hk7emgqw-zeunku:entitypagenum=23:0:recno=4:resultset=5:format=FI:next=html/record.html:bad=error/badfetch.html:entitytoprecno=4:entitycurrecno=4:numrecs=1

Is there a workaround to this? I'm not on campus this year, so I'm always going to be accessing WorldCat like this.
  • sorry for not responding earlier. The Cornell proxy is standard and should absolutely work (note how the URL still has newfirstsearch.oclc.org in it - at UPenn it doesn't). You're not seeing any URL bar icon on Worldcat?
  • do you have Standalone running when you try? Currently this will only work in Chrome with a running Standalone instance.
  • Yes, version 4.0.23.
  • you should update to 4.0.25.2, though likely it won't make any difference here.

Under chrome://extensions/ when you click on Options for Zotero, what does it say right below "Zotero Standalone?
  • There nothing for "Zotero Standalone," but this for "Zotero Connector":

    Zotero Connector 4.0.21
Saves references to Zotero from Chrome and Opera
    Permissions Options Developer website

Different version number, I notice. The Standalone version is 4.0.23.
  • right, but when you click on "Options" you will see the Zotero Standalone thing. Different version numbers are OK (except, as per above, you should update Zotero Standalone).
  • This is what shows when I click on "Options." Then clicking on the "Update status" button under Zotero Standalone does nothing:

    Zotero Standalone
    Zotero Standalone is currently available.

    Save via Server
Zotero Connector must be authorized in order to save items to zotero.org when Zotero Standalone is not open.

    Report Errors
Zotero Connector has experienced the following errors since it was first started:
  • That's all looking good. Other pages are working for you?
Have you tried reloading the page, does that help?
  • I gave up on that page, resorting instead to a different catalog.

Later, though, I called up a different record in WorldCat, and the icon showed up as it should.

    Evidently a transient problem
