Ibid in Author - Date

Hi,

is there a way to make Zotero to insert Ibid in Author-date based citation style? I searched the discussion but all I found was about footnote styles.

Thanks,

Lukáš
  • I don't believe that any of the existing Author-date styles use ibid. Is there a style that you want to use that does?
  • I am not sure that I understand - are you asking me which style I would like to use with ibid or which style actually uses ibid?
First best would be ISO 690 Author-Date to be finished with ibid. Chicago is fine too.

Chicago recommends against ibid. in its Author-Date style:

"A. Chicago considers an in-text parenthetical author-date citation to already be in a short form and therefore discourages “ibid.” as a substitute. If you must use “ibid.,” just be careful that no intervening sources creep into the text. It does mean “in the same place [as the last item cited],” but it requires that the reader see or recall the last source, an inconvenience we feel outweighs the minor space gain."

  • Yeah, while it's certainly possible to have an author-date style that uses ibid, I'd recommend against it for the reasons outlined by the excerpt Elena posted above. It doesn't really add anything, and it's not very reader-friendly.
  • Ibid helps in case you are over the word-limit and cite books with two authors with long names:) or if you discuss some author´s ideas. But thanks for answers anyway.
  • If you want to use ibid. because you're over the word limit, have a word with whomever set that limit. If word limits include in-text citations, then this encourages sloppy referencing...
