"Editor-in-chief" field in APA style?

I've been having an issue that I don't think has been raised before (if it has, apologies): how to cite to a chapter published in a multi-volume book with an editor-in-chief as well as distinct editors for the separate volumes. For instance, the Handbook of Child Psychology (6th edition) has two Editors-in-Chief (William Damon and Richard M. Lerner). The title of the first volume is "Theoretical models of human development," edited by Richard M. Lerner. But there's no "Editor-in-chief" contributor type in Zotero. "Series Editor" doesn't work, because (a) the Handbook isn't a series and (b) the APA style in Zotero doesn't print that field in bibliographies. Is there a modification of the APA style in Zotero to accommodate this?

FYI, Lerner himself says that the correct way to cite chapters in the Handbook is:

Lerner, R. M. (2006). Developmental science, developmental systems, and contemporary theories of human development. In R. M. Lerner (Ed.). Theoretical models of human development. Volume 1 of Handbook of Child Psychology (6th ed.) (pp. 1-17). Editors-in-chief: W. Damon & R. M. Lerner. Hoboken, NJ: Wiley.
  • not possible and I don't think we'll bother.
This seems excessively rare. FWIW, and since citations are most importantly intended to locate information, I'd cite the editors in chief as regular editors - they're the ones listed in the LoC catalog, for example
  • FYI, the LoC catalog gives the following:

Handbook of child psychology / editors-in-chief, William Damon and Richard M. Lerner.
    ...
Contents v. 1. Theoretical models of human development / volume editor, Richard M. Lerner -- v. 2. Cognition, perception, and language / volume editors, Deanna Kuhn, Robert Siegler -- v. 3. Social, emotional, and personality development / volume editor, Nancy Eisenberg -- v. 4. Child psychology in practice / volume editors, K. Ann Renninger, Irving E. Sigel.

To me, it looks like the LoC distinguishes, and reports, both editors-in-chief and volume editors.

If this isn't worth your time, then I do beg your pardon. But it's actually not an "excessively rare" issue; the Handbook is one of the most-cited sources in developmental psychology, and other Wiley publications of similar prominence have the same structure. And while I respect your position on the purpose of citations, the requirements of publishers seem (to me) at least as important to Zotero users.

the point is more that we can't account for every single author type that someone comes up with. (Managing editor, editor in chief, acting editor, volume editor, chapter editor - you understand why that'd be a problem.)
he requirements of publishers seem (to me) at least as important to Zotero users.
is an "Editor in Chief" included in the APA manual? (it's not in the Chicago manual)
Listed in the style requirements for important journals?
    That would matter.
  • Here's a relevant reference from an article in Developmental Psychology, one of the top journals in the field (and published by APA):

Lerner, R. M. (2006). Developmental science, developmental systems, and
contemporary theories of human development. In W. Damon & R. M.
Lerner (Series Eds.) and R. M. Lerner (Vol. Ed.), Handbook of child
psychology: Vol. 1. Theoretical models of human development
(6th ed., pp. 1–17). New York: Wiley.

Somewhat different from the format I gave in the original post (probably because it's the format for a particular book, rather than an APA journal), but still gives both "Series Editor" and "Volume Editor" info.

    FWIW...
  • Series editor we can do in general, but I'd want to know what the APA manual actually wants. Most journals will give authors a fair amount of leeway for non-standard citations. To wits, in the same journal you also find:

Lerner, R. M. (2006). Developmental science, developmental systems, and
contemporary theories of human development. In R. M. Lerner (Ed.),
Handbook of child psychology: Vol. 1. Theoretical models of human
    development
(6th ed., pp. 1–17). Hoboken, NJ: Wiley
