Google Patents not working

2»
  • We just updated the Google Patents translator. It should update on your computer automatically within 24 hours, or you can update manually via Preferences... -> General -> Update Now.

Let us know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Maybe it's because I'm an MLZ user, but the translator is still not working for me.
  • yep - see Frank above - "MLZ uses a separate channelfor updating translators" - that's particularly true for translators that are actually different between Zotero and MLZ such as google patents.
  • @wonblee: I've merged the upstream changes to the MLZ channel, try updating translators and see if it works now.

I've adopted the upstream changes verbatim. I don't have time at the moment to check how well the date field assignments line up with expectations in the styles -- if you spot any anomalies, let me know.
  • @fbennett The update is working very well. Thanks!
  • I've been having problems with the Google Patents translator recently.

The site seems to have three different layouts, and these appear to be related to the age of the patent.

Here are several examples showing the different formats:

    Style 1:
    http://www.google.com/patents/US2970959
    http://www.google.com/patents/US3483178

    Style 2:
    http://www.google.com/patents/US6239091
    http://www.google.com/patents/US20030114329
    http://www.google.com/patents/US6812195

    Style 3:
    http://www.google.com/patents/US20110172136
    http://www.google.com/patents/US8263542
    http://www.google.com/patents/US20100093588
    http://www.google.com/patents/US8303721
    http://www.google.com/patents/US20120142576
    http://www.google.com/patents/US8309509
    http://www.google.com/patents/US20050233937
    http://www.google.com/patents/US8361946

Style 1 appears to be used for older patents (mid-1970s and earlier).
For style 1, the translator successfully imports metadata, but fails to download pdfs.

Style 2 appears to be used for patents published between the mid-1970s and a few years ago. It differs from style 1 in its page layout, and it shows two additional buttons on the appbar (Find prior art; Discuss this patent).
For style 2, the translator successfully imports metadata and pdfs.

Style 3 appears to be used for the most recent patents, and the most significant difference I've noticed is that style 3 incorporates a new toggle-able button on the appbar, allowing for quick navigation between a patent application and the associated grant.
For style 3, the translator fails to import metadata for inventors and assignees, and it fails to import "grant" pdfs; however, it successfully imports "application" pdfs (though still fails to import inventor/assignee metadata).

Any help regarding these issues would be greatly appreciated.

    Software info:
    Zotero standalone 4.0.8
    Zotero connector 3.0.8.1
    translators updated daily
browser: Chrome 27.0.1453.94 m (I replicated the problem with "style 3" in Firefox, but didn't do any rigorous testing)
    OS:Windows 7
  • A translator fix is now up. Your version of Zotero will automatically update within 24hs, or you can update manually using the "Update Now" button in the "General" tab of the Zotero preferences.

Any further problems let us know & thanks for reporting
  • Thanks!

The translator seems to be working for the new patents now, but it still doesn't import pdfs for the oldest ones (i.e. "style 1" as previously described).
  • works in Firefox, but not Chrome. I'm not sure why, will try to take a look.
  • I've noticed that the URL is not being included when selecting patents, either from a Google listing or a http://worldwide.espacenet.com/ listing. However, the URL for a USPTO listing appears to be captured correctly (unfortunately it gives a very long URL and is limited to US patents). Is there a setting that will allow the URL to be captured in the Google or http://worldwide.espacenet.com/ listings? I'm using Chrome and Zotero standalone.
  • Should be fixed now for both sites. Update your translators via Preferences -> General -> Update Now, restart browser, and try again.

Thanks for reporting! (though next time please start a new thread, since this was not directly related)
