Can't Toggle FIeld Codes in footnote/endnote

I'm using endnotes via Word Mac2008. Suddenly, field codes appeared everywhere in all my documents. I was able to right click in the body of the text and select toggle field code to eliminate in the body, but I can't do the same in my endnotes (i.e. right click doesn't give me that option). Couldn't find a solution.

    If I might add, now whenever I add a new citation, it switches to field codes in the entire document!

    Ok, solved it sorry for taking up space. In preferences, I turned off showing field codes. So somehow, in Word, I switched field codes on.
