'Standalone currently unavailable'

I have installed zotero for chrome, but the little icon is not appearing next to my browser url box.
Looking at Chrome extensions > zotero > options, I have authorized it, but in the top box it still says 'Zotero Standalone is currently unavailable'.
How do I get it to work?

  • Zotero URL bar icon will only appear on websites that are supported. Try http://www.amazon.com/The-Wealth-Nations-Penguin-Classics/dp/0140432086

    Have you installed Zotero Standalone from http://www.zotero.org/download/ ?
  • Oh, thank-you, yes it must just be the case that the sites I am visiting are 'not supported'. Thanks for explaining!
  • Two additional notes:
    1. You don't _really_ need to install Zotero Standalone to add references to your library from Chrome, but it does help. If you only install Zotero for Chrome (or you do not open Zotero Standalone) and try to add a reference using the URL bar icon, Zotero for Chrome will communicate directly with zotero.org and add the reference to your online library. Otherwise, Zotero for Chrome would communicate with Zotero Standalone and store the reference in your library on your computer. There are some websites that will not work without Zotero Standalone, however. And in general we recommend that you do install Zotero Standalone for more reliable and convenient reference import, library management, and, of course, word processor integration.

    2. If you do not see a URL bar icon on a particular page, but you still want to add it to your library, you can right-click anywhere on the page and select Add to Zotero Library (that's not exactly what it says, but I can't check right now). This will create a Web Page item, fill in some very minimal metadata, and, if you have the option enabled, will attach a snapshot of the page. Whenever available, though, we recommend using the URL bar icon.

  • thanks so kindly aurimas. i was unable to retrieve my library from zotero cloud. is there something that i can do to get my files/documents onto my stand alone or/and onto my word connection?

    More generally, we don't know what you're actually trying to do/what your problem is.
