"*Search" Column within the list view of Items

Within the center pane of Zotero, standalone is what I have, there is a list of items which is displayed. One of the coulmns that can be displayed is "Publicatioon". But not every item type in Zotero has a "Publication" field.

So I think the "Publication" filed ought to be changed to something generic like "*Source" where Source is not a field in any item type.

Now with each item type use an "*" besides the name of the filed that will be used for the "*Source" information.

So for a:
Journal article > Publication
Book section > Book Title
Conference Paper > Proceedings Title
Encyclopedia > Encyclopedia Title

---
Edited title to add "*Search" field within the list view of Items

!@#$ Edited title again. Column for *Search in table view of Items.

I'm not really sure what you're asking for here. Those fields are all already mapped to the base Publication field and show up in that column. There are other base fields, though, so there's nothing special about that one that would make it deserve special treatment in the UI. As long as the end result is what you want (showing up in the right column and transferring properly when you switch item types), it doesn't really make a difference.
  • It is a usability issue. By having a field "*Source", which is not in any of the data types, there is less user confusion about what part of the item record the "*Source" information is using. So "*Source" is for each record type to determine.

Like many things after you'd worked with Zotero a month you don't notice things that confuse a new user. Accepting the idea would just involve making some label changes.

"Publication" is an appropriate term for all the fields it describes, as is "Date" (another base field that's available in the middle pane). Again, there's nothing unique about "Publication" here—there are other base-mapped fields. (Also, "Source" is vague to the point of being meaningless, and we're certainly not going to add unexplained asterisks all around the interface.)
  • Ok, you understand my idea. Dropping the rope....
