Add field for LCCN's to books

Before books had ISBN numbers they had LCCN numbers which were assigned by the Library of Congress. At the library of Congress website I can lookup a book by its LCCN. However when imported in Zotero the LCCN number is lost.

----

When I have photocopied pages from books I have gotten in the habit of coping the page showing the copyright information. That way I know exactly what edition of book, published by who and so on.

---------

Assuming the field is added, then you should be able to lookup the item at the LOC. Like you can lookup a Jpurnal article that has a DOI. (mouse over LCCN, get hand pointer & popup "lookup", then left mouse to lookup in browser window.)
  • What's the URL you are importing from?
  • I assume the library of Congress catalog. I'm not sure we'd want to add that field it seems rather specialized and mostly redundant when we have ISBN and call number. What exactly is the purpose? If we just want LOC lookup we can do that via ISBN.
  • Looking up at Library of Congress use LCCN 56011373 for example. The book was published in 1956 before ISBN numbers were being used.

    see search at:
    http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First

The book is "The amazing world of John Scarne, a personal history.". published in 1956. Lib of Congress Cat Card Number 56-11373.
  • Geeze, you're working on Saturday & Sunday? Hope you drew short straw for covering the weekend and not 24/7 on project.
  • Reason I asked is because I was looking at results from the search here: http://www.loc.gov/index.html

    which look like http://lccn.loc.gov/56011373

and we don't have a translator for them. If there was a dedicated LOC translator, we could add LCCN to the call number field
  • Thanks for the information. I didn't understand that Zotero didn't "own" the translator which sucks data out of the Library of Congress website. After years of typing all the data in manually, this seems like magic.

It still seems that the field could be added so that the data could be entered manually. When a translator is available, then the field would get filled in automagically.

In the mean time, I guess I'll just use the "Loc. in Archive" field. I'll enter LCCN(56011373)
  • As I mentioned above, probably the most appropriate field for LCCN right now is the Call Number field. The Library Catalog would then be "Library of Congress"
  • no, the call number field isn't a good place - LoC has separate call numbers that are by themselves quite important to a lot of people (especially as they're used in many libraries beyond LoC).
The way I would like to handle this is to add some code to the "Voyager" translator that currently handles LoC for Zotero to add attached links to the permalinks to all items from LoC and to also recognize the permalink pages like http://lccn.loc.gov/56011373
Since the main function for the LCCN as per above would be to get to the LoC item the permalink would solve that and we don't need a new field.
  • individual imports from the Library of Congress will now attach a permalink (based on lccn). This _won't_ work for anything imported via the folder icon - just single items.

    Adam,

I'm a little confused. Is this in a coming release? I've checked for updates for both Zotero Standalone and Firefox. But this isn't working.
    From:

    http://lccn.loc.gov/56011373

I get the Book" with an attached note with one line "statement of responsibility:".

It is using - Save to Zetoro using "unAPI"

The attached note seems new, but it doesn't make any sense...

    From:
    http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?db=local&CMD=lccn"56011373"&v3=1&CNT=10

I get the "Book" but nothing else.

It is using - It is using - Save to Zetoro using "Library Catalog (Voyager)"

    ------------

I also confused about "folder" vs. "single items". Is the icon at:

    http://lccn.loc.gov/56011373

    a "folder" or "single item"?

    -----------

    edited to add translators...
  • This one
    http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?db=local&CMD=lccn"56011373"&v3=1&CNT=10
will give you a link. Translators don't update immediate. You can either wait until tomorrow or update them from the General tab of the Zotero prefs.

The permalinked records - i.e. http://lccn.loc.gov/56011373 - use a different, generic translator, so we can't attach links for those easily.

All of those icons are what I describe as book icons. The folder icon is e.g. what you see on google scholar:
    http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=nl&q=evidence+based+medicine+levels+&btnG=&lr=
  • Adam,

It is working now. It must take some time for a new translator to work through all the servers too. I had updated my translators last night.

    Thank You!
