PDF's not online or on other machines

I have been using Zotero for about 4 months now. I purchased expanded storage and I typically attach a pdf of every article I enter into the program. I typically use the Firefox version but I also have the stand alone installed. I have both a Mac and PC.

Tonight I was out somewhere and wanted to share a copy of an article with a friend. I logged into Zotero and went to the reference. In the reference it shows the name of the document.pdf and then has a link called (attachment info). If I click that link I simple get a notes box.

I opened my laptop when I got home and noted that the file was on my harddrive and that a complete sync was done. I checked my preferences and it says attachments to Zotero.

Where are all my pdf attachments?

Actually - the problem is worse than I thought. I noticed that Zotero is not synching any of my attached pdf's - even between my machines. I do a lot on my PC - I just happened to be doing some stuff on the laptop tonight. When I went over to my PC I noticed none of the stuff I have EVER done on the laptop or my Mac are synched. Again - I have paid for storage - I have all Zotero installs set to sync on start.

Basically I see each machine sync and update - I see the pdf file as an attachment, but if I didn't create it on the specific machine Zotero gives an error message that the file is missing or has been moved and asks me to locate it.

You only have 100MB of files uploaded.

Are the files you're looking for stored within the Zotero data directory, or are they linked? (The latter aren't synced.)

If the former, if you right-click on an unsynced file and choose Show File, what's the name of the parent directory (a random eight-character string)?
  • Oh I think I see now. I've been using Attach Link to File as the command. I guess I should be using Attach Stored Copy of File command?

If So I now get it. I need to go back and make some changes.
  • If you want the files synced by Zotero itself, yes. Zotero doesn't sync linked files, since those could be anywhere in the filesystem, and we haven't wanted to have Zotero automatically updating/deleting files outside of its own data directory.
  • I went back and change a number of files to "attach stored copy of file" and although they now show a PDF file on the other machines, they still are not downloaded or synched on other machines. Similarly, online the file is there but does not show a download link capability.

    They are not syncing

  • Thanks I will give that a try
