Cannot get the data from Springer

Zotero seem does not able to get the data from springer. The version of zotero is 3.0.11, the browser is chromium, and the translators are up to date. Examples are as follows

http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11244-007-9029-0
http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11244-008-9057-4

It shows that "An error occurred while saving this item. Check Known Translator Issues for more information."

  • This is caused by a bug in the standalone version.

I have updated the site translator to side-step this bug. The translator will update on your computer automatically within 24 hours or you can update manually via Preferences... -> General -> Update Now. You may need to restart Chrome.
  • Hi,

I have the same problem here, for example with this link:
    http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10909-011-0396-3

I use Zotero 3.0.11 too, on Firefox 19.0.2 for Ubuntu12.04

    How should I proceed? Thanks.
  • start by updating Zotero to 3.0.14, restart Firefox and try again.
  • Yep, it worked--Thanks! Why didn't Zotero self-update? I have "Automatically check for updated translators" checked, and even when I clicked "Update now" it didn't work (it said "Up to date"). I had to go and download the add-on myself (not a big deal, but inconvenient). Is it better to have Zotero as a stand-alone application instead?

A side-note, in case it's useful for someone:
Following the link "Access old SpringerLink" (top right on link given in my first entry) and then it worked fine (before updating Zotero).
  • "Automatically check for updated translators" does what it says. I.e. it auto-updates _translators_, not Zotero itself. The latter is controlled by Firefox (if you have the Firefox plugin). You might have disabled automatic add-on updates. On the add-on page, there's a gear button at the top right.
  • Much more likely the problem was that jordimp had Zotero installed from mozilla's add-on page, where it's still at 3.0.11. Only installing from zotero.org assures timely updates.
  • Ok, I see. However, I have it to update add-ons automatically. Oh, well, who knows! I'll just double-check next time I've a problem with an add-on.

Thanks for the *very* quick replies!

Oh, wow... I thought that update went through a while ago. I think someone should add a big bold notice on the mozilla page to encourage people to download from zotero.org instead.

I don't know that we can do that, exactly, but I updated the note at the top to say that the version there may be out of date.
  • I've got the same problem with Springer Link.
I'm using Zotero 4.04 and Safari as browser.
The error I receive is: "An error occurred while saving this item. Check Known Translator Issues for more information."

    Here is an example:
    http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12193-009-0034-4

    Thank you.
  • start by updating to Zotero 4.0.8
  • Done, still doesn´t work....
  • provide an error report from Safari after a failed attempt
    http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs#provide_a_report_id
  • Error report simply says:
[JavaScript Error: "No title specified for item"]

This is the page I'm trying to save:
    http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12193-009-0034-4
  • you're not going through a proxy, right? These are the URLs as you see them? And no system-wide proxy either?
  • Nob, no proxy.
  • That's Zotero Standalone, right? not Zotero for Firefox?

What does the Zotero URL bar icon say if you hover over it?
  • As far as I know it is the Standalone. I installed it using Safari.

When I hover over the Zotero URL bar icon on the page in question
    (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12193-009-0034-4)
it says: Save to Zotero (Springer Link)

Hovering over the icon for example on this page yields "Save to Zotero (DOI)"
  • Do you have anything other than safari open? Zotero Standalone is a separate program. The safari plugin just helps Zotero Standalone communicate with the browser (technically it does more than that)
  • Yes I have the Zotero program open as well (sorry for not mentioning it)
  • As adamsmith requested above, can you generate a report ID for an attempt to save the Springer Link page? We'd actually need the ID, NOT just the error that you see. https://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs#provide_a_report_id
  • Finally figured out how to do that...

    Here is the report ID.

    ID is D589148241

Nothing useful in there. I think we'd need a Debug ID from the Safari extension rather than from Standalone. Instructions on that page are for Zotero Standalone, but you can find similar Debug Output Logging settings in the Advanced tab of the preferences for the Safari extension (which you can access by control-clicking on a web page and selecting "Zotero Preferences…").
  • sorry for the confusion. I should have linked to the safari section just under Standalone/Firefox.

BTW, those instructions were quite difficult to find if you are looking for Safari _debug_ ID or log. It's actually referred to as Report ID. I'd suggest we move them to the Debug ID section, since I think it submits the full log, no?

aurimas: Report ID != Debug ID. The Reporting Bugs page talks about Report IDs. Debug IDs are from the Debug Output Logging section of the preferences in both Zotero and the connectors. There are just no instructions for generating Debug IDs from the connectors at the moment. Those need to be added to the page I linked to.

(And to clarify, yes, you asked for a Report ID and that's what hbo101 called it as well, but hbo101 provided a Debug ID (prefixed with 'D'), which I think will be more useful in this case anyway.)
  • yeah, whatever I said above made no sense.

Anyway, I added instructions here: http://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output
  • Sorry for the delay, the new instructions on the cite really helped.

Performed the requested steps and the Debug ID is D1802795262

    automaticSnapshots => true
  • I believe we're hitting https://github.com/zotero/zotero/pull/206

The connectors never received this update. I really think we need to update Connectors, since they are missing several important updates.
  • I fixed the Springer Link translator to skip the ad-tracking pages (or whatever they are). This fixed the Safari issue on my end.

@hbo101, update your translators and see if this is fixed. You'll probably need to update the translators in Zotero Standalone and then in Safari (Advanced tab -> Update Translators).
