Report ID: 544228757, zotero won't sync

From looking at the forums, it seems there was a server problem earlier today, but according to the posts I read, it seems I shouldn't be having sync problems now; however,
I've been having trouble syncing for the past few days, so I'm afraid it may be some other problem w/ my set-up.

I'd appreciate any help you can provide.
  • Are you still having trouble?
  • yes, I'm still unable to sync.

What's the issue, exactly? On the server I see multiple repeated full downloads of your library data (which generally shouldn't happen but could result from an earlier glitch). They might take a while, but they go through eventually. In what way is it not working?

There's an active full download on your account right now. (The reason they take so long is that you have a huge number of items in your personal library and one of your group libraries.)
  • the sync arrow-icon in zotero keeps rotating without any changes in my library.

I've actually performed a fresh reinstall of firefox
(w/ no prior personal config) yesterday, and left firefox on w/ zotero syncing since that afternoon.

The library on zotero hasn't changed since I reinstalled firefox/zotero.

Should I contact you again if it still hasn't finished syncing by tomorrow?
  • I'm looking into this.
  • I'm still having trouble syncing, received an error this morning
"Error connecting to server. Check your Internet connection"
and submitted an error report (Report ID: 1033634766).

I hope this helps you figure out what the problem is.
  • I tried syncing on Zotero-Standalone (for Firefox)
and received a different error message:
"Invalid response from server (Report ID: a00855f5ac)".

    ReportID: 1876535745
  • OK, no guarantees, but try again now (and then wait 1.5 hours for it to finish).

Just to explain what's going on here, somehow your client did a full reset that caused it to redownload all data from all your libraries, which generally shouldn't happen but can under a few rare situations. You have a huge number of items between all your libraries, though, and that's causing the download attempts to time out. I may have fixed the timeouts now, however.

We'll be switching to a new syncing architecture in Zotero 4.1 that will allow library data to sync in much smaller portions, which should help avoid issues like this. In the meantime, we'll get this to go through, one way or another.
  • It looks like you just had a sync (or two, actually) go through.

So, first, try not to make any further changes to your libraries from any computer or the website until this is resolved. As long as no data in your libraries changes, the download will remain cached, and attempts should take a few seconds instead of over an hour.

Second, what happened on your end?
  • It still hasn't sync'd on my end,
    and received an error message:

"Empty response from server. Please try again in a few minutes."

I submitted another error report: Report ID 1757613135
  • I would try a few more times. It's going through on our end.

Are you connecting via a proxy or anything of the sort?
  • I actually thought that this might have been the culprit too, so

I unchecked all of the boxes under "Proxies" in Zotero Preferences, Firefox is using system proxy settings, and my system setting is set not to use a proxy.

It's still giving me the same error message every time I try to sync.
  • I went ahead and turned on Debug Output Logging

    The DebugID is D425878757
    ReportID: 1980684897
  • The settings in Proxies wouldn't matter, but a system proxy would. If that's disabled that shouldn't an issue, though.

It's definitely working on our end at this point. It's using a cached download and taking about 15-30 seconds each time. But this is 87MB of data, so it's entirely possible you're running into some sort of network glitch, or that Firefox is failing on a request that large.

It probably won't help, but you could try installing Zotero Standalone, which will share your existing Zotero data directory by default, and syncing with that.

If you can't get it to go through, it might help to remove items from the trash on the server. (Doing it in the Zotero client on your current computer won't help, and you shouldn't do so.) On the website you can currently only delete items permanently one page at a time, which might take a long time. If you have another Zotero client that is in sync, you could empty the trash there and sync. If not, I can help clear out your trash on the server.

I can't sync on Zotero Standalone either.

If it's not too much trouble, could you clear out the trash for my account on the server?

I'll try to make a habit of clearing this out myself in the future.
  • OK, cleared, but before I let this download go through, could you just confirm the number of non-trashed items—including child items, as explained on that page—in your local personal library? I want to make sure it matches what's on the server.
  • In my personal library, I have 6439 items including child items.
  • OK, well, the smaller download went through (twice). I don't suppose things are any better on your end?

(I could also delete items from the trashes in your group libraries, though there may not be enough to make a difference.)
I'll try to make a habit of clearing this out myself in the future.
You don't need to in general. Items are deleted automatically after 30 days. (It can't hurt if you know you've deleted a lot of items, though.)
  • Thanks! It looks like I'm finally able to sync w/ the server!
  • Great. Sorry for the hassle. Again, this sort of problem is part of the reason we're switching to a new sync architecture in Zotero 4.1.
  • Hi there,

I am encountering a similar problem. I cannot sync my Desktop zotero with the online account. I keep getting a red exclamation mark and an error message : Error connecting to server. Check your Internet connection.

My internet is connected and works fine i am using chrome.

    All suggestions are welcome.
