Numbering of citations

When I move my citations around in my document, I can't figure out how to get Zotero to automatically update the numbering. If I manually change the first citation I moved, the rest of the numbers will change correctly, but is there any way for this to be done automatically?
  • clicking on the "Refresh" button should do it.
  • You mean "Zotero Refresh" on the toolbar? It wasn't working for me, anything I am missing?
  • works for me. Which Word processor? How are you moving citations around? just cut&paste?

Microsoft Word document. Yes, I'm just editing the manuscript and need to move stuff around (cutting and pasting, deleting, etc.).
  • Hmm - could you try if this works in a very basic new document?
I.e. just insert three citations and then switch them around using cut&paste - do they update after clicking "Refresh"? (and so we're not talking past each other - we're talking about the "Refresh" button in Zotero's Word toolbar, correct?)
  • Yes, that's the "Refresh" I was referring to. It worked in the new document! I wonder what is wrong with my current document. I'll look into it, but thanks for your help!
  • One thing I could think of is if you ever manually edited those citations, though that seems rather unlikely for numbers?
  • No, I didn't, but I have been having some general trouble with the citations in that document, so it's probably all related. As I recently switched to Zotero, it's just good to know that it will work in the future (with other documents)! Thanks!
  • Assuming all of the citations were inserted with Zotero (otherwise this definitely wouldn't work) - if you find you're having too many problems with the current doc, you may want to run through these:
