Again, a syncing issue

Hello!

I have been unable to sync my zotero for over a week now. I joined a group online for work, and now despite how long I wait for it to synch or even if I shut down the whole computer and restart, it won't sync. The green arrow spins and spins and then tells me "A sync process is already running. To view progress, check the window in which the sync began or restart Zotero," even if I do not have any internet open. Help!

Restart your computer. If you still have trouble, post a Report ID.

Edit: Er, sorry, you say you already did. But you shouldn't see "A sync process is already running." unless Zotero was already syncing in another (possibly hidden) Firefox window. In any case, a Report ID may be helpful.
  • Maybe I should have been more clear on what I have tried. I tried restarting my computer multiple times. I have also tried changing my password, disabling automatic syncing, syncing only documents and not attachments, syncing for over 2 hours, and not opening up any internet windows.

I have not gotten a report ID, as it only tells me what I copied and pasted above, about the sync already being in progress. My firefox is not open, as I have a mac and it is not on my bottom scroll screen thing. I hope this helps.
  • Follow my link. We still need a Report ID, unless the menu option is greyed out.

I'm not totally sure what you mean by this. I assume you're referring to Firefox not being in your Dock, but it's not yet clear to me whether you're even referring to Zotero for Firefox or Zotero Standalone. This is why we need a Report ID.

I have been waiting for the report to be submitted for some time now. Unsure of why it is not working.
  • Is this Zotero Standalone or Zotero for Firefox?
  • Zotero standalone. It had been syncing but now is not.
  • Are you using a system proxy?
  • I use the proxy through chrome for academic research sites. But I do not use a system proxy in general. I use Zotero through its own program in my dock.

Do you mean a web-based proxy that you log into on a web page, or do you mean the proxy settings within Chrome? If the latter then you're using a system proxy, because Chrome doesn't have its own proxy settings. The latest version of Standalone doesn't work with some system proxies, which is something we're in the process of trying to fix.

If you mean a web-based proxy, that shouldn't affect Standalone. But this certainly sounds like a general connectivity issue in Standalone. What happens if you check for updates in Standalone?
  • OH! It is the latter, which means it might be having issues (although I have used the proxy ever since I got zotero, so I am unsure why now it won't work). Is there another one I can download to make it work without losing my information and continue in my group?

It's a new problem in recent releases of Zotero (or, technically, in the Mozilla framework we use). We're looking for a fix. In the meantime, your best bet is probably to use Zotero for Firefox (which will share your Zotero data directory by default—you just have to close Standalone before using it). You could also reinstall 3.0.14.1 but we don't really recommend that.

You could also continue to use Standalone for now and switch to Zotero for Firefox every now and then to sync, but saving PDFs (for items saved via Chrome) may also fail in Standalone as long as this problem exists.

To help us debug this, could you tell us which proxy settings you're using (HTTP, HTTPS, auto-discovery)? We don't need hostnames—just which settings you're using.
  • auto discovery, if that helps! thanks! will tell you if this works.
  • I downloaded the new one, and it now syncs. However, now I have importing issues.

  • we need more details on what types of issues - importing what, from where?
  • Hi Adam.

Well, I have tried importing through firefox from campbell libraries, proquest, and center for review and dissemination. For these websites, I need to download an RIS and then import it into zotero. It did not work for any of them. It did work when I was on pubmed and could click the icon on the url part and download it straight like that, but not when I downloaded the RIS first. I also tried opening the RIS in text and copying, then improting through "import from clipboard" to no avail. Hope this helps! This problem has been occurring since late last night.
  • Could you start a separate thread on this, please? - link to here, but I'd like the topics separate. Campbell libraries and Proquest should also give you URL bar icons in Zotero, so URLs for those would be great.

I downloaded the new one, and it now syncs.
    The new what?
  • The proxy problem may be fixed in 4.0.8, now available.
