Cannot delete (Change) primary email.

Hi

I wish to change my primary email address from a non existent email to my normal email.

I accidently signed up with a non existent gmail email address. I had to create the gamil address to confirm the account. I have gone to account settings, added my normal email address, checked the "primary email address" and pressed update and get the message "Cannot delete primary email". Other forum posts suggest this can be done but it doesn't work for me.

How can I delete this address so I can delete the relevant gmail account as I will never use it.

  • I also have problems. I changed my gmail account and now that I want to change the primary email account for my Zotero account, I cannot.

    Is there a way to change my email address without starting a new account?
  • Indeed! How? Why has Support not answered this? Every other log-in site in the Universe provides a fairly simple way to discover and do this.
  • You can add a new email address from https://www.zotero.org/settings/account

    You need to make the new email the primary address before you can delete the first one.

  • 1. add new e-mail
    2. check that e-mail for a message by Zotero and click the validation link
    3. select that e-mail as primary e-mail.
  • Thanks this worked..I just add ..First add the new email and update it then delete the old. takes two steps. can not do both at the same time.
  • I am also trying to change my primary email address. I have put in the new email, checked the "resend validation emails" and nothing happens. I do not get a verification email to my new address, therefore the email is not verified and therefore I cannot set it as my primary email. What can I do?
  • Check your spam folder. Otherwise, try deleting the new email you added and adding it again. Validation emails are working in general. Are there any special characters in your email address perhaps?
  • I have a related issue: I can't add a new Email-address to the Settings. I fill in my Email into the "add Email"-field, click on "Update Emails" and then receive the error message "Could not add email address". Any thoughts?
  • Most likely because it is already being used by another account.

  • Hi, My student who signed up our lab for Zotero has left so I need to change primary email to mine so I can buy more storage. When I try its saying it cannot add my email. This thread appears to suggests I cant because I already have a personal Zotero account with my email.

    Is this correct? I need a solution. Hopefully I dont have to create an email account just for Zotero!

  • That's correct. Since the primary e-mail can also be used for login, you can't have the same e-mail on two accounts.
  • @Brown Biomechanics, I assume you're using multiple Zotero accounts for your lab, and that the student set up a Zotero group with file storage? One option would be to ask the former student to assign the group(s) to your personal Zotero account, and then buy storage for yourself (since group file storage space is counted against the storage quota of the group owner).
